To be blunt, the overlap between academic and industry is in reality, quite narrow. Right now, many companies are quite risk averse, ie they want the specific skills they want; pretty much nothing else. It would be a lot more effective to network with people that are working (or have worked) in the industries you’re interested, researching the professional orgs and pubs. Good Luck!
It's not a fun answer, but viewing it through the lens of the machines that will be assessing it before a human ever has a chance to. In other words, make it ATS friendly. That's pretty much all that matters right now. Figure out the keywords and skills your resume needs to include for the roles you're targeting, make sure they're included, and then fill out around them.
This will sound brutal, but it makes sense. I heard a recruiter say they'll look at a resume for literally 15 seconds before deciding whether it's a keeper or it goes into the discard pile. So you have to make things very clear and obvious to accommodate that first skimming by human eyes. Having a brief summary up top can help, and clarity counts above all.
