Hi I've joined Harman in May but hasn't been assigned to any project yet. I've asked hr and reporting manager they said they're working on it and there's nothing to be worried about However I just want to know if there's anything I should be concerned about what's the bench policy? I got my highest paying roles with Powerpoint slides and jumping into Figma working files. Your site is just the frame around your thinking and work.
when you reach a higher level, your portfolio is just for recruiters and sometimes the 1st point of contact.
Why would visually impaired people be interested in looking at a visual portfolio? Why would you recreate your case studies in HTML/CSS? None of this makes sense.
Our portfolio reviews often include leads across the UX team, not just visual design leads. We are all evaluating different aspects of the work- including accessibility.
The framing of the post was UI/UX portfolios from UX practitioners. If someone is positioning themselves as a UX practitioner, I would expect the portfolio and case study presentation to demonstrate an understanding of UX more broadly.
The point is that if you’re going to be a user experience professional, then you should use good user experience and accessibility practices with your portfolio. If your portfolio is only usable on a limited set of screen sizes and devices, then it’s not a good experience.
I’m not saying that your portfolio shouldn’t look nice. I’m saying that - as a practitioner of User Experience, you should practice what you preach. For example, instead of mocking an entire case study up as a JPEG, use a WordPress, Wix or Squarespace portfolio template that includes a nice-looking case study template. You can type up your case study, and put the images of your work in there. That way, it is a responsive design that makes sense for web. People who might use a screen reader to read text back to them can have your case study read back to them because there is text to be read on the screen. If I’m a UX director and I’m not on my desktop computer, but I want to check out your portfolio on the go, I can read it on my phone without having to run back to my laptop at work
That’s awesome, but I also think that’s a different approach. I think if my expectation was that you were going to show me a deck and Figma files, I’d be okay with that. But if my team needed an interaction designer who works mainly in web, and I was given a website to look at their work, I would expect that it would be built responsively and in a way that makes sense for web. Not expecting a development genius, but at least someone who knows the medium.
What does everyone think about using Google slides (shared link) for a UX researcher portfolio when applying to jobs? I’ve included overviews (situation, methods, impact) of my UX related research projects. I primarily chose it because it’s free and I am more comfortable with a PPT like experience than some of the portfolio solutions hosted on other sites. For some context, I have 10+ years experience in researching/designing employee and customer experience programs but am newer to the formal UX space.
I used google slides as a companion to my portfolio site, which i would customize microsites of for interviews. but its been a while, my last couple jumps were headhunted so no portfolio reviews etc really took place. As a HM I appreciate something that is easily approached by anyone. That said, the OP example of recreating everything in html/css doesn't really make sense unless you're going for a FED position.
