When I was taking business classes a few years back in college, I had a professor who took "finance" so seriously that he said it "fih-nance" (w emphasis over a) instead of how most people say "fai-nance." I always thought he was such a goober and that I'd never go into this field. And now here I am, working at a bank 10 years later 😂 but hey at least I don't say it weird though!

Pre-MBA I said fai-nance (long i) but MBA programs tend to grow a person and you leave saying fih-nance (short i). It’s not weird if you think about it. Most people say ‘fih-nancial statement’ and not ‘fai-nancial statement’, so why pronounce the base word finance differently. That inconsistent pronunciation actually comes off as weird. Most people don’t think about such things, which is lazy and uneducated, signaling those who belong to the proletariat vs the bourgeoisie. I notice when unwashed commoners use the dirty pronunciation and judge accordingly.

funny

Hahaha fair enough!

Fihnance is the way to go in life.

I am glad I am discovering contrary opinions! I can't ever see myself saying it like that but who knows, someday I'll be old too I guess 😉

I actually don’t believe all the judge-y stuff I wrote, just thought it was funny to say. 😉 But I have been called out for saying finance with the short i and it leads to interesting conversations like this.

I work with a junior PM who is not performing. Not my report, we share a mgr, but as a senior PM I lead the product. He can’t finish anything, needs a lot of coaching, I give him 2h/wk but I can’t afford more.
After 2mos I raised it to our mgr who promised to work with him. 2 more mos passed, mgr talked to him only once, no change in perf. I think mgr doesn’t want to deal with the problem. Now they ask if I want to manage JPM. It is going to be a ‘no’ but I want to ask some advice on all this.

Hi!! I’m an HR Coordinator currently (about two years of experience) but my job has so many responsibilities and tasks I’m beyond burnt out. It’s truly impossible to focus on one task because things are constantly being thrown my way. I’ve heard whisperings of a promotion or raise, but my workload is already too much, I don’t know if I’d want to accept more responsibility. Is it normal to feel like you have just as many responsibilities as your superiors who make 30k+ more than you?

Since it's EOY, it should be fun to compare notes on our our past investments, in terms of returns and strategies, to help us in the new year ahead.

So here I start with mine: From early last year around the start of the pandemic to today, I have grown my investment (cash + IRAs) from about $1M to about $3.4M today. My Fidelity chart below:

I wonder how many here are doing better, or similar, or worse than this. How's your overall investment doing, and what your chart looks like?

Advice needed on handing in notice, I recently signed an offer letter and understand the screening process takes 4-6 weeks. I have a month's notice period and have agreed a preliminary start date in Feb.

I was planning on not handing my notice in until the checks had been completed so its all secured (not that I think I will fail any checks), but apparently I need a reference from my current employer not previous ones. Can't really do this without handing in notice can I?
