Usually, you’ll see signs like you’re being asked to cover parts of that role, you’re looped into higher‑level conversations, or a leader is informally “testing” you. If you’ve seen none of that, I’d schedule a career talk and ask very directly what it would take to be considered for the next level.
In most cases you'll need to show some initiative to move up. You can volunteer to lead projects, or step up in some other way. If you just coast along and don't show people that you've got ambition it probably isn't going to happen.

I would say when your manager ask you about your futures plans with the company and how they see you can be a great asset to them. Also, when they give you more work and they see that you are ready to be promoted.

Totally get where you're coming from, I’ve been in my role a couple years too, and sometimes it feels like the path up isn’t very clear. From what I’ve seen, it’s a mix of both..sometimes it’s a natural progression if you show consistent performance, other times you need to make your interest known and ask about growth opportunities. Definitely worth having that conversation with your manager so you know what’s possible.
