I read everything that's sent to me, even if I don't reply to every email or teams message. I think it's our responsibility as leaders to stay on top of things, not add that burden to teams who are already working hard and have a lot on their respective plates.
I do trust the squad and assume anything truly urgent will be flagged, but also don't want to abdicate my own role and judgement in determining what's important and what's an fyi

I agree! I hate being the person that comes back from vacation and doesn’t read all the past correspondence, putting more work on my teams. While I hope they’ll flag what is most urgent, I do take the time to read everything that was sent while I was out

That seems to be the best approach!
I know I can count on my team to bring me up to speed on anything I've missed, but I still read through every message and email. Everyone knows when one of us is on vacation. If they send a message anyway, I'm inclined to believe it's because it's important.

That’s how I tend to be too. I’ll read everything (minus newsletters, Google alerts, etc) but trust my team will fill me in on anything important and then pay extra close attention to that
I would like to say that I do... but I honestly don't. I usually find the most effective thing to do is block the first few hours out on my calendar, and then schedule a quick touchpoint with a team member who can give me a quick rundown on what is going on.
