Negotiation theory the teach in every business and sales class: the first number out there is the one you both land around, unless you are in the bozo zone (unrealistic number)
You're doing the right thing. Trying to get them to give a number first is important. It lets you know where you stand and it gives you a position to negotiate from. Providing a number first may put you at a disadvantage, so that should be avoided.
I always give the number because comp is important to me and I know how much I want. I’ve usually already researched what their band is so I have an idea going in. Companies will try to bring you in at the lower end of the band if you give them the opportunity, wouldn’t rec having them go first
I give a higher but reasonable number first
