6.5, rounded to 7. Public defenders, Trauma Surgeons, Investment Bankers, Police officers, college professors, etc. All have more stressful jobs in my opinion. We are definitely up there but it’s not due to the nature of the job but due to trying to remain profitable and constant budget cuts.
College professors? Maybe the ones that do research, but the rest have very cushy jobs.
Depends how we are defining stressful. In the world...audit and tax can’t be above a 3-4. A doctor who performs heart surgery, where the slightest mistake means the patient dies, now that’s a 10. A police officer in a high crime area, where their life is at risk, 10. Auditing FS of a private company, where the investors may not even look at the fs (cause they only look at their investor statements): idc the deadlines and effort, can’t legitimately be over a 3. Even on a public high risk job, can’t be more than 4-4.5 tops. Yes, we have a “stressful job” in terms of our deadlines suck and hours suck and clients can suck. But compared to “in the world” what we do ain’t nothing. #protectthecapitalmarkets
LOL, fair. I would not go as far as meaningless, but the lack of meaning compared to those other jobs makes the stress have a maximum that can’t compare to those other jobs listed.
Somewhere below brain surgeon and above wine taster
Considering nobody is dying, in danger, or really impacted at all by the work, probably a 6 normally, maybe 7 during really bad busy seasons.
You mean a 4 normally, maybe 3 during really bad busy seasons?
I would say 5 or 6, it can feel stressful but it’s self induced. It’s stressful because of the long hours which forces you to balance other things in your life. I felt stressed early in my career trying to meet deadlines, but now I’m not as stressed because the worst is that tax returns are late or I get fired. Both those scenarios aren’t that big of an issue to me anymore. I still work with a sense of urgency, but not stress.
I’m going with 5-6. The stress is only a product of your want to impress/perform well, so the stress level will depend on how much you care about career progression. Put it like this - are you stressed because you care about the FS getting signed or because you care about your reputation? Great points raised above, some jobs will be stressful because you care about the output (saving a life, putting someone behind bars) however I would argue that if you feel like your future is in audit and so you want to impress then it can be extremely stressful. There will be some accountants that care more about their careers than some GPs care about their patients. Who’s job is more stressful in that case? But yes the job is stressful for different reasons to ones where it is life critical. I actually think I’d be less stressed as a cop though because the adrenaline and physical activity would suit me. Being sat at a desk and constantly chased for info is more stressful for me! Note: this stress level will reduce to 0-1 when notice is given.
For the most part I don't feel our job is stressful. The hours just get really long
I don’t know, I feel the stress of working 100 hours each week and hoping we file on time and don’t get fired can’t compare with a surgeon who’s slightest mistake can cause a patient to die, or an undercover agent who may be killed if their cover is blown.
That being said there are definitely a lot of jobs that are way less stressful.
You have to yourself we’re not saving lives here
when your role deals with folks health, kids, food or money that in that order lol
