My advice is take the offer if you are unhappy with salary
You should never use an offer to increase your salary because they'll remember that
@EY1, but what other choice is there? My counselor can't fight for me and I wouldn't even know what my options are. Hence feeling trapped and this question on fishbowl
You’ll want to reach out to your RSLL or your SL leader. Be prepared to leave if you are using the offer as leverage. I’ve witnessed this happen with a counselee and leadership doesn’t mess around and WILL call your bluff. Off cycle increases are extremely rare and pretty much only happen if someone made a career move recently, e.g. brought in at wrong level.
Similar situation. Been at the firm four years and have an offer for 15K more in base. I brought it up in my comp discussion and spoke with both my SLL and Talent. I made the conversation more about the value I bring to the table, highlighting that I love being at D at don't want to leave but just want to make sure I'm being fairly compensated. SLL knows me and knows my work (1 performer last three years) so was relatively supportive/understanding and is working with Talent to get me a counter offer. Definitely wouldn't pull this move more than once, but I'll let you know how it turns out

Also is this advisory or consulting? And how long have you been with the firm/what level did you come in at
Consulting, grew up at the firm. 5 years
Yeah... this is what it's so hard. Moved regions and service lines in the last 6 months so don't know any leadership. Just feeling so defeated after so many years of dedicated service. May just have to leave and come back (love my team and don't want to let them down :/)
OP - You do you. I don’t want to discourage you from having a conversation around the value you create and fair market comp associated with it, but the reality is that you should enter it with a mindset of being a hill to die on once you start this path. Agree with EY1- it will be remembered.
Op. I’ve had this exact thought years ago so let me give you the what current me would have told five years ago me. Comp and worth are relative to what you compare against. Do you feel like you’re not being recognized generally or is it just your pay? I hit 100k after 6 years. It didn’t make me any happier just because I hit a number. I had an offer in hand for 125k and went the route of leaving. That triggered a comp discussion and talent offered me 10k to stay. I stayed. It wasn’t worth the hassle or the fear that following year that there would be some sort of retribution.
Also ideally you already have a relationship with this person and the comp conversation isn’t your introduction to him/her... i would also recommend bringing your capability leader into the conversation.
Was your bonus/year end review not what you had expected?
If you are enjoying where you are (as you say) convert that happiness into a $ value. Does that still make you underpaid, coz comfort-level and network do have value? Factor those in. If the answer is yes, take the offer and run. Never use it to negotiate a stay.
You have to be ready to take the offer if current employer doesn't give you what you want. I don't recommend using it as leverage if you are just bluffing.
Make sure this is a good increase you are asking for. You only get to use this tactic one time.

@D3, thanks for your insight. For me it's honestly just pay. It's hard to see people my level or c's being brought in at 5-10k higher then I make even after promotion last year. I'm in a similar boat and what you got in my mind would be best case scenario. Really don't want the new offer but it's over 20k more. All the verbal acknowledgement of worth/value I feel only goes so far...
What have been your year end scores?
