Why are so many public accounting firms not hiring full time associates (2026) right now? Isn’t it recruiting season?

In addition to offshoring already mentioned, we hired for 2026 6+ months ago. Our inters from the spring and summer have start dates in fall 2026. They probably hiring for 2027 now.

There is also an influx of eligible candidates this year as well with the switch from 5 year to 4 year. Compare that with a soft economy, AI and offshoring, the numbers needed are lower and the applicants are higher.

We already hired for spring of 2026 in fall of 2024. So we are looking for spring of 2027 interns now.

Wow things have changed in the last few years. I had no problem getting internships 3 months before the start date, or even getting them moved up earlier.

We already hired from interns. We’re hiring for 2027

Because they figured instead of underpaying you, they could pay foreign workers even less.

Most of our new hires come from our intern pool these days. I know, it sucks for people who didn't get to intern, but that's how we do most of our hiring.

I got rejected for an interview from Big 4 NY Audit, even had referrals from Manager + level people. 3 years w/ audit senior at mid size firm, 2 years fed tax at big 4, and 1.5 years Internal Audit healthcare. Currently self employed for a year to work on investing. Do I literally need a partner level referral to get back into Audit? I thought there was an accountant shortage.
