Things are probably improving now but have been pretty bad since late 2022. Overhiring and underfiring, experimentation with “no up or out” ending abruptly, constantly changing promotion rules, pushing some integrative consultants to the expert track, problems with the expert track/functional affiliation in consulting overall, revolving door at sr EM+ level in multiple practices, constant « penny smart, $ stupid moves » in the attempt to streamline the business, business model reinvention with 80% of revenue now coming from transformations - and the list goes on.
Bain1, yes, there was an article on LinkedIn lately referring to an interview with an SP. Ofc, I don’t have access to financials but it sounds about right (i.e., strategy consulting at the firm shrinking dramatically). I keep hearing MT (transformation) leadership use similar stats.
M4, have you seen any success stories of switching to the integrative path? It may be industry- and function-dependent, but in my pocket literally no one could switch back (and many tried). I’m talking about S&CF and POP.

You are the kpmg of MBB. I don’t hear a lot of them complaining either compared to others.
Also it helps to be least tech savvy of them all. Amish don’t care if AI takes all.
You seem very angry at Bain for some reason. Didn’t get an offer?
People at BCG most certainly complain about BCG, maybe more so than McK. BCG used to tout how much “better” it was than McK about staying out of the headlines, that’s definitely shifted this past year.
BCG was also really cutthroat about finding “performance issues” in employees the last few years (since ~H2 2022) to find reasons to up the % of involuntary RIFs while McK offered extra severance to get people to leave. BCG also underfunded bonuses in ‘23 for the first time since ‘08.
I’d argue it’s had the biggest decline of the three in the last few years.
We have invented PLENTY of performance issues over the past few cycles. “We don’t do layoffs” so we just change the goal line and POOF you’re in concerns.
I’m surprised if you’re saying you don’t have any of the issues listed above. You guys hiring? Because EY is feeling the exact same as what McKinsey described here.
A big part of ours is that leadership keeps promoting the wrong people. They’re choosing the ones that don’t actually know how to do the work and instead brown nose the partners. So when it’s time to sell to clients or deal with them they just don’t know what they’re doing. It’s insane.

is it accurate that McK, BCG, and Bain are freezing starting salaries due to AI
No

sorry to hear it
Super weird vibes from leadership in most studies, and as a BA it’s just not worth dealing with this BS when I can deal with the same BS at BCG and get paid 40% more 😍
People come to FB to vent. Sometimes it’s valid, sometimes not.
You can’t take everything at face value but if there are a lot of complaints about a specific item you can probably assume that it is an issue.
