I have my government students (12th grade) do current events most Fridays, after a quiz on what we covered that week. The students look up a news story (I provide links to a wide variety of news sites on Google Classroom, but make it clear they are not restricted to sites listed) and complete a short worksheet that includes facts and opinions from the article, why they believe it's important, what they think will happen next, and one question they have on this story. I've found it to be a good way to get them to see what we're studying in the news
We use the Summit Leaning Platform for me school. Usually we have projects that tie into current events. Currently we're doing a Justice and Injustice project that has students discussing current events in the United States.
Newsela also has great resources for current events that you can assign to students.
I use Current Events as my opening and closing procedures. At the end of every day a student presents a news story from within a couple days. The next day, students come in and answer a question on the story. Then we have periodic Socratic Seminars on big stories selected by me. I don't give a whole lot of other homework, so I've found most students put a little effort into finding good stories.
I have 2 current event stories up on the board right away at the beginning of class for my 11th/12th graders. They write them down, answer a reflection question, then we discuss. They have a quiz on the current events every Friday and I grade their notebooks every 2 weeks. For my middle school kids, I have them find one article per week, write a summary and a reaction. We discuss them in class on Fridays. You can show CNN10 or the choices program has good stuff!
