Why do companies make you fill out entire application sheets with all of your details and work history and still make you submit a CV and cover letter on top of all of it? Surely the application I just filled out sorts out all the details that would be on my CV!

vHey 👋🙂 I totally get your frustration, it does feel redundant! 💼 Many companies require full applications along with a CV and cover letter because each serves a slightly different purpose: the application standardizes your info for their system, the CV highlights your skills and accomplishments, and the cover letter shows your motivation and fit for the role 📄. If you’d like guidance on streamlining applications and making your documents stand out, you can reach out to emilycartercareercoach.gmail.com, they’ve helped my brother and others optimize applications and get noticed by hiring managers 🚀. Keep pushing, the right opportunity is just around the corner!

This seems right and I hate it.

When I fill out the application portion for professional jobs that require experience, it feels a lot like I'm taking a "purity test" online that was designed for junior high students-- the kinds that asks if you've ever held hands or gone steady. Only on these applications they're asking questions about my high school years and it's not just checking for diploma and leaving room for accomplishments. Will I miss out on professional jobs because I can't remember something from 30+ years ago? Then we get into the realm of age discrimination that can go either direction.

It’s an intentional layer of UX friction to weed out the people who are serious about the role vs. those who are not. “Easy Apply” is just too easy.

I guess so, I’m happy to follow out an application I just don’t want to also write a cv and cover letter.

Honestly I don't even know how to write a cover letter. Even if I did I would probably struggle.

They’re honestly pretty hard to write a good one anyway.

This! I believe you may've answered your own question though. They need to see whose lying before paying for a background check, just a process of elimination.

I AGREE!

Advice when looking for Tech Consulting internships in Chicago or DC Metro? My GPA (3.04) has disqualified me from most major companies. I've opted to focus my efforts into my student organizations and helping others reach their goals, in doing this I compromised for a B average. Are there any firms that will accept recommendation letters with the application? The networking route is also something I am exploring, but haven't had much success thus far. Any help is welcome! It’s interesting to see several articles and surveys emerging saying the initial bump in productivity from mass remote working has started to come down or even go negative as the novelty wears off and people start to get worn down from longer hours, the stresses of having kids at home full time, burn out from increased workloads, stress from the pandemic, etc. Curious to here people’s thoughts, do you think you’re less productive now than back around the April timeframe?

Additional Posts in Salary Negotiations

What are tips for salary negotiations? I'm fairly new to my registered representative role so I'm not sure if that'll impact my ability to negotiate? Any insights or tips will be greatly appreciated.

I received a job offer from company A and am currently negotiating salary. I have an interview with company B next week and know that they offer a higher base pay. There’s no guarantee that I will be offered a job at company B but my gut is telling me that company B would be a better fit for me. Should I accept the offer from company A, continue interview process with company B and then rescind my offer with company A if company B offers me a job? Will I be burning bridges?

Hey! Any Google folks know if it’s possible to negotiate fully remote if a contract role is hybrid? Personally, I don’t want to relocate and go to the office on a contract role given the current economy. Plus, I’m assuming contractors are the first to go in layoffs. I just think it’s a fair trade off if I’d be allowed to work fully remote. I’m also trying to have flexibility to manage my Airbnb business in a different country. Same time zone as the home office if I’d travel weeks at a time.

I’m interviewing with a startup and the range has a 40k difference from the lowest to highest point. It’s also pre-seed and comes with equity, and health, 401k benefits. It’s a director of sales role so I would eventually be recruiting and managing a team along with building the processes and strategy. What would you consider a fair compensation package? If they offer me something on the lower end of the range, is it still appropriate to counter with an offer that is over their stated range?

For expert witnesses/lawyers

I’m a former forensic scientist that left the field several years ago. I recently received a subpoena from a case I worked and suggested to DA to have evidence re-worked by the lab or stipulation. If I am required to testify (as an expert witness), I would need to book a flight, hotel, etc. My question is this: can I ask for my requested hourly rate, travel, and hotel to be covered when speaking with DA or is that “not how this works” as the investigator put it?

My husband just received a job offer on an opportunity he is really excited about. It would be great for his career and they are giving the 15% jump in base he asked for, however they won’t share what the target bonus amount would be. It’s an executive director position, so I would assume it’s a decent target bonus, but without that in writing it could honestly be a gift basket at the end of the year. Is it a red flag for them to not share this? His total comp could be less at this new job…

Im currently going through industry change.
Im a pastry cook with 4yrs experience and the average salary start for this position is now at $22/hr here in vegas, especially in the strip. But cooking/baking is not my passion. So im changing into veterinary medicine and im seeing that the starting rate for a vet tech is around $16-18. Why is that?? Why are people in the vet med industry being paid so low?? Something needs to change. Labor of love aint enough for the people in this job.

Cash bonuses, raises, profit-sharing, company equity, 401k match, etc.

I’ve been verbally offered a position at a new company, but the recruiter insists on getting a verbal acceptance before sending the offer in writing. This person insists on negotiating salary before sending the paperwork. Generic benefits, RSUs, bonus info have been provided; it’s all unofficial.

This is absurd. Am I missing some “new way” of doing things? Your take?
