For real. I think you're spot on about the fact that it's just an excuse for them to pay you less. Seems like there are no true entry level jobs anymore. I've been trying to help my cousin land his first graphic design role and there's literally nothing that doesn't require 2-3 years at least.
You've nailed it. It's exactly their way of saying they want a mid-level, without paying mid-level salary. Unfortunately, with how bad the job market is, they have no problem finding mid-level candidates who are willing to work for almost nothing.
Been that way for so many years.
Yup. And it doesn't make it right
Slapping Junior on the title means they get to pay you less. That’s pretty much it.
Probably also makes them show up higher on job boards when people filter by entry-level
Dr and engineer have very specific degrees with very specific requirements. It’s a poor comparison. Jr just means lowest on the design totem pole. You’re either jr or sr within an organization. Jr does not necessarily mean no experience; 2-3 years seems appropriate for a jr title. And yes they are paid less.
PS AI is destroying “graphic design” as a profession. I strongly encourage developing other capabilities / job titles.
I disagree
"Yet they pay less"
You just got your answer.
Call me crazy, but I think adding “entry level” and “Junior” to a job requiring more than 2 years of experience should be illegal.
Jr engineer roles definitely exist. Some are even called that. "Senior" kicks in about three years. Junior doctors exist too. They are interns or residents. Doctors don't get the "MD" title until they finish residency. Meanwhile, they work long hours for relatively low pay.
Sure, but those actually apply. Most of the posts I see for "junior" designers, are just for regular designers with actual experience already.
True. And it also helps keep seasoned professionals from applying
As someone who hiring people.
Junior doesn’t mean no experience. Mainly we divide rank as “staff - manager - director” in each rank will have “junior - mid - senior”.
Junior means you are as qualify as mid-level, you just need to be oversee for a while for the company to set you as a mid-level. You can have awesome resume but if we never work with you I can’t let you handle client without overseeing.
Same goes to senior-manager (senior art director) I will hire a person who have been leading a team and several accounts not just their book and skill.
