Why does it seem like writers have more empathy than art directors? They seem just a lot more caring.

Generalizing much?

likefunny

I don’t think that writers have more empathy, we’re probably just better at conveying empathy verbally.

Was just going to say: “Because writers know how to use words.”

I have Had the exact opposite experience

Cause we’re up late comping.. lol jk I think we’re generally nice people? Ha

Not necessarily agreeing with the generalization, but (good) writing is fundamentally an act of empathy. It's understanding another person and trying to figure out what they relate to and connect with. You could potentially make really cool, visually compelling art without understanding a thing about other people, but writing just doesn't work that way.

like

Well design is meant to be that way too, as it needs to communicate ideas or feelings to a wider audience. It’s not just about making pretty pictures.

It’s true. Not all serial killers are art directors, but all art directors kill without remorse.

If that doesn’t work, try showing the first 6 rounds.

How many writers have you worked w? Just curious, I’m happy to hear that there’s some empathetic writers out there.

I’ve SEEN a lot of writers that are narcissistic, ego driven, only around bc they’re good at office politics, and ones that bug out if their partner can write (take advantage of them and take sole credit, or keep their partner silent and have them execute ideas), some that literally only wrote one or two lines in the entire process of a campaign. I’ve also seen writers surprise their partners w visual inspiration, pick up their partner some lunch, hang with their partner to provide support on late nights, and credit their partner for lines or ideas.

Personally, I’m empathetic to a fault and it’s screwed me over more times than I can count. ADs and designers have some of the most difficult positions in the industry. To be in the weeds w their writer concepting nonstop, then when it’s execution time we realize we’re only halfway done at best for an internal review the next day. When the writer finishes to live their life we sometimes become envious or bitter. Sometimes we decide not to fall on a sword because we know the juice won’t be worth all the squeezing (partner doesn’t get it or care enough to put time into it).

There’s hybrids in this field, I’ve even seen hybrid teams and it’s amazing to see. Blanket statements based on personal experience isn’t the best mindset in the world of communications. Also a decent amount of ADs are either tired or somewhat introverted, I try to adapt my energy to what our team needs.

I can imagine many believable stereotypes between the two roles. Never in my many years in advertising have I noticed one position having more empathy than the other.

Probably because we don’t have to resize banners

If I had a dollar for every banner I resized..........

I usually see the opposite.

Yeah, I don’t care

One of the most caring bosses i've had were art-based ECDs and CCOs. They're not exactly the most great with words, but their actions speaks loudly enough.

I’m a hype man verbally, yes and always, but explaining things on the spot to a Sr. I black out. My teammate tells me it’s either brilliant or verbal diarrhea.

We see things through a filter of our own experiences.

Not true at all.

Because we see how hard our ADs work and it’s just a natural emotional response

It’s an intrinsic part of being an artist 🤷🏻‍♀️

Exploring as in my daughter says outright “I am going to kiss you,” to her bestie before bed. Then after 15 minutes of giggling in bed I go to tell them to be quiet and see my daughter’s bestie is showing her buttcheeks to my daughter. To top it off they start trying to tell me they are laughing because they are reading “belly laugh books for kids”. Help.
