Why does the lateral market feel stalled for labor and employment right now? I have 7 years of experience and applied to 25 firms since January with only a handful of screens. Each process slows down after the first call. Is this a market issue or something I should be changing?

I don’t know - I’m at a big 4 L&E firm and I feel like we’re always doing so much hiring. Is your 7 years experience all L&E?

like

Not sure. Is your experience all L&E? If not, then you might not he as marketable as someone with 7 years L&E experience. It’s also a numbers game. A handful of screens for 25 apps sounds about right. The last time a lateraled cold (without a contact at the target firm), I applied to over 100 roles.

I'm not noticing this at all. Within 2-3 weeks of dipping my feet in the water recently I'd gone all the way through the interview process at 3/4 of the Big4 in my MCOL city (and the 4th has an incredibly small presence here.) I don't think for a third year I have any exceptional experience either. All 3 seemed desperate to hire.

Big 4 is probably a good bet for OP. They’re always hiring because of the revolving door but it’s good experience for L&E.

Noticing the same thing. Long wait times between interviews and offers.

Case load= malpractice? Small plaintiff’s firm of 25 attorneys. I was a 2 year associate hired and given 50 active files in pre litigation status. 9 mos later a partner quit and I inherited 45 more. I got up to 105 files. Now I hover at 85 active files in varying stages of pre lit. I asked managing partner for help and was told to settle more claims to lessen my load. Is this what people consider negative work culture?

I have a governmental entity client in Texas that wants to offer 6 weeks of paid parental leave for all employees, even those who aren’t eligible for FMLA. After the paid 6 weeks, the employee can choose to continue paid leave using any accrued personal leave.

Texas does not have a paid parental leave statute.

If paid leave above what is required is offered for parents, do we also have to provide the same benefit to other employees that are eligible for unpaid leave?

What is considered a “large” caseload in employment litigation? I work at a large L&E boutique law firm and handling about 14-15 active litigation cases in state/federal court or arbitration. Some of these matters are multi-plaintiff and multi-defendant cases, but none are class actions. This does not include any matters I am handling in the charge stage or in pre-litigation. Not sure if that’s a typical caseload or not?
