Rising Star
I’ll preface this by saying I’m a CD writer. But I’ll do my best to explain why it might seem that way.
The reality is, ideas are predominantly expressed through words. That doesn’t mean that art directors are any less important. They are equally responsible for coming up with the idea. But an idea at its purest form or when being described for clarity, it’s done through words. Conversely, art direction usually gets more shine during execution (depending on the concept, media, format etc).
So when someone says ‘what’s the idea’ it’s usually the copywriter who answers because they have crystallized it down to its simplest, biggest form. And sometimes that means they probably get more of the credit.
Doesn’t mean it’s right or fair, but that’s what happens.
SC1, if that’s your idea of a great ad, you might be in the wrong business.
If you’re good at being an art director you get the same amount of shine. But if you’re just a glorified designer with a title not so much.

A23 If someone has no taste and no craft, then they’re not ADs. They’re just hacks.
I know so many ADs who don’t present enough. You must be a strong presenter to really stamp your name and presence onto the work. My last partner and I were really well balanced in terms of big-thinking and knowing how to speak the the work/idea. We alternated leading big presentations. Neither one of us outshone the other.
My CCO is an art director and I feel like writing doesn’t matter at my agency compared to design and visuals. I believe a lot of it is influenced from the top down. My last agency the CCO was a writer and it was the opposite.
