I think talking about money in general is uncormfortable because that is how society has made it. They tell us not to be open and share our salaries so then conversations about money become awkward. It shouldn't be that way but it is.
I've never heard of someone losing their job after a salary negotiation/raise conversation. They're super commonplace and normally there are not negative consequences, even if they can't meet your request.
It's partly that most of us consider money to be our own private business. And companies just naturally make it awkward to talk about it. Anyway, the key to getting a raise isn't to talk about the money, but to talk about yourself and how much you've improved in your job. And then bring up how your compensation should match your performance.
