1000%. Yes they do. If you can’t boil it down to 20 seconds, you probably aren’t entirely sure what you do.
Yes, everyone should constantly be able to explain what they do generally and what they’re working on currently in 20 seconds. Not only is it useful for general human interactions, but it’s also useful to exercise that muscle so you’re not constantly stuck in the trees. Being a good lawyer means simultaneously seeing the forest and the trees, and this is an easy everyday way to work that muscle.
Piling on. You gotta be able to tell someone what you do in 20 seconds or less and make it sound interesting. If it provokes questions about details that’s OK, if not better, because it gets the person engaged.
E.g.:
—“I help big companies get deals approved by the government.” “Oh, really? Like, banks?” “Sometimes. But it’s usually airlines. Remember when airline A bought airline B? I helped get that through. It was brutal.”
—“I sue insurance companies that don’t pay.” “So, like, health insurance?” “Yes. In fact, I made one of them pay this summer for killing guy.”
—“I defend companies that get sued for discrimination.” “Oh, wow, lots of juicy stories I bet.” “You wouldn’t believe the crazy stuff I see.”
You get the idea…
I’m somewhat of a generalist. I change my elevator pitch depending upon my audience.
Good lawyers don’t need one because people already know what they offer. Otherwise, always good to have a pitch ready for Uncle Jerry but it will never lead to business, revenue, or career advancement.
Put very simply we solve our clients legal problems and help them get things done! .
It's important to be able to show you can communicate in a potty and direct way with non-lawyers so they have confidence that your counsel will solve problems and not be perceived as not in touch with real world objectives and issues. An elevator pitch does that
“I’m a corporate lawyer. I help people buy and sell companies, restructure them, set up joint ventures and other similar things based on their investment and growth goals.”
I’m a divorce and family law attorney. My elevator pitch is exactly that lol
I am a land used lawyer. I represent builders and developers. That’s my pitch.
Pro
“You ever heard of Harvey Specter? I’m the exact opposite…”
Obviously meant to say land use lawyer
Only 4 scrubs like u
Remember the derogatory stereotype of lawyers as ambulance chasers? Don't you think if one caught up to the ambulance, they would need a 20 second pitch to seal the deal? This applies to all lawyers, businesspeople, and engineers and creatives.
TBH, 20 years in, I'm still working on mine.
I work for a surety and most people have no idea what that is.
All the more reason to have a good elevator pitch.
