Most likely will not unless, like in some in-house roles, where the creative and strategy are a merged role.
Best bet to get a start as a strategist in your current agency.
Damn. Well thanks.
This industry is not even hiring copywriters for actual copywriting jobs lmao
IF you have a REALLY good relationship with the CSO/Head of Strategy/Strategy Director who is directly involved in the hiring process AND have proven your ability to think strategically about a brand AND are willing to start over to learn all the other “basics” you need to know as a strategist (eg, research design, implementation, analysis; creative brief writing; etc), then it MIGHT be a possibility. But not very likely.
May have better odds at going back to school (VCU Brandcenter, Miami Ad School, etc) and specializing in Strategy.
Great advice. Thank you!
I’ve always found that good copywriters can make good creative strategists. Sure, they’re not great on research, stats etc but brilliant at insight and coming up with sharp angles and creative propositions, often straddling the line between strategy and creative.
It’s funny, I keep hearing this sentiment shared across agencies and yet they’re also saying it’s impossible to make the switch. (And yeah most creatives are probably bad at research but for my purposes I think that’s where I went wrong in choosing creative - because I love research)
What’s stopping you from doing strategy for your current clients
It’s just nonsense social media content for a brand that won’t let us do anything interesting.
As someone who hires strategists: yes, I would hire a copywriter for a strategy role with two caveats.
1. The candidate would need to first show the ability to think strategically (make sure you are getting experience building conceptual brand/campaign strategies, briefs, and research at your agency)
2. The candidate would have to be applying for a relatively junior role (associate strategist or strategist) - would be hard to give them a more senior role without direct experience
That said, path of lease resistance would be to get a strategy role at the agency you already work at first.
While my agency is not hiring, feel free to PM me.
Thanks, PM sent!
Significantly more likely if you can do it in your current agency. Rarely will an agency take a chance on someone without Strat experience on their resume, especially as it’s such an important role. Not saying you’re not qualified because I don’t know you, but just a reality.
The one thing I’ll say you have going for you is not being too high of a level, so grand scheme of things you might have a shot shopping around for entry level because you could have a leg up on those without experience at all
For sure current agency - but if you can’t, I’d recommend also looking at client side - find a marketing role client side that gives you some broad experience and then hop back to agency in a strat role.
I’ll definitely try this route. Do you know if it’s realistic to transition to like a jr brand manager or a marketing strategist from a copywriter role, or do you think I need fo come in as an intern? Also, I’m sure it’s not impossible but any idea how much harder it is to get back into the agency world after?
If you’re at TBWA Chiat NY, DM me, maybe we can talk and try to make a plan?
Unfortunately I am not at TBWA NY
I would for sure (former head of planning & a copywriter too).
