If you’re unemployed it’s much easier to be in a buyer position as opposed to a seller. However if the role isn’t even remotely aligned with what you want to do or growing those skills it would be tough to transition over to what you want to do.
Really depends on your situation. If you need the funds to live then taking a job that’s not a fit isn’t a bad idea and could give you valuable experience for your next step. However if taking that job potentially will get in the way of finding your ideal job then it might be a bad move. From an external perspective some might question why you were only somewhere for a short time, however this is somewhat common these days unfortunately. Would a company hesitate to lay you off probably not so you shouldn’t be afraid to leave it’s just business… but I wouldn’t make a habit of this.
I recently took what I thought was my ideal job, 6 weeks in and it has turned out to be the worst job I have had and am now looking around before quitting.
Yeah. After writing this post I thought about how we have such a stigma around short stints on our resumes but companies rarely face similar scrutiny or concerns around letting someone go who just isn’t a good fit.
Mentor
Take whatever comes first but do not stop looking for a better role.
Think of your career as a collection of potential experiences and not a linear progression.
By that, I mean to say that you should have a couple different directions you might want to pursue at any given time and be flexible in how one job might take you down a different path than what you want ideally, but just know it is growing in new directions.
You never know. If you are open and nothings on the horizon might as well get out of the rain for awhile. And any job after a yr is prob not the same as what you signed up for. Once inside you can shape it.
If the stint is short enough, there is no steadfast rule that you have to advertise that you were there at all. You could always list the gap time on your resume in different ways of consulting, spending time with family, etc. if needed.
