My work requires intense focus for several hours at a stretch. Between these hyper focussed sessions, I spend 10-15 min on my phone doing innocent but wasteful things; a game or two, a dog video, or check a social media site.
It’s a mental break that gets me ready to dive into the next chunk of my day. A sort of work palate cleanse.
Should I be “working” those 10 min? What about the 2-3 hours on weekend days I spend wrapping up work from the prior week? Does that offset it?
I pay for my freaking phone, and it’s annoying that I’m expected to load work apps onto a phone I pay for with zero comp for that.
Now you want to block my phone as I walk in the door?
Please be joking
OP, no work from home either as people could potentially waste time there. And when do the hall monitors start? Are you allowing 5 minute bathroom sign-outs? Or 3? We have a security guard who makes sure we don’t pack a book or lunch or a deck of cards as some may not be able to work with those items near them.
And you don’t let your people go home at the end of the night do you? Think of the productivity hours you are wasting by letting employees go home to their families.
Oh wait… I forgot, we are adults and hired because we are good at our jobs and can be responsible for potentially millions or billions in accounts and feature development. I think we can figure out how to make sure our work gets done without being treated like a kindergartener.
Definite overreach.
This kinda sounds like you have a beef with some coworkers that you think are wasting time.
If the work is getting done, who cares?
Wow OP… work should forcibly remove your cat. Seems like that’s taking up a lot of your mental focus and possibly seconds or minutes a day which could be productive.
Should work allow you to have pets or loved ones to distract you from your number 1 focus; work? Just a thought, lots of my coworkers get distracted by picking up their kids or taking their wives to get surgery or feeding their pets so I’m just wondering what people think.
What next? Ban the photos app cause looking at my kids takes up too much time?
Why not just bring back slavery while we’re at it
First, never use your employer's wifi and if so, use a VPN.
If you want to continue using TikTok, just connect to a VPN server located abroad.
@pranjal varma Any VPN. I use ProtonVPN. I can use same account on my laptop and phone. A VPN is always useful when you connect to open wifis like those in airports, malls, walmarts, costco.... Never trust in a WiFi is not yours.

Op, US government has given the exactly option to Grindr. And the Chinese owner decided to sell their stakes in order to avoid the ban. Just because TikTok has an army of teenagers and CCP behind it, doesn’t mean US government stance is unique.
So wait for how it plays out and not try to start “ban” culture.
True story
Could you imagine working for a company that actively blocks your cell phone signal and an active shooter situation were to occur and you needed to call for help. Or one of your coworkers fell down in a stairwell and is bleeding out and you need to call for help with no phone in sight. So do you choose to stay and try and stabilize them or do you leave them there while you find the nearest phone to call for help?
Well, if you’re worried about non productive time, you let the poor ba$t@rd bleed out on the stairway. It could take minutes away from your productivity to call 911. 😉
I agree with you although the use of cell phones is not allowed while working but it is allowed while on break for lunch
We have to user our cellphones to log into our work applications. So the use of cellphones isn’t banned here. Also I use mine to multitask especially while hosting meetings.
Is it impacting your pockets, hoss?
It's not a "ban". Get your facts straight.
And it’s more than just TikTok. If someone explained to OP what it exactly was, he/she might change their tune.
Are you sure they're wasting time? Cause yeah, people get on their phones during work but nine times out of ten they've completed what they're doing and are just taking a small break before going for the rest of their work. Everyone is guilty of taking a quick peek at the social media during working hours at least once. If you go down this route then you're going to have a lot of unhappy employees at the end of it all.
If they're productivity is affected then you should address it like a responsible, level headed manager. But if it isn't affected then what does it matter? They're still doing to same quality and amount of work, just let them have a minute to breathe before getting back to work.
If managers know how to track metrics (which they should be doing), then it’s a non-issue. If someone is spending too much time on their phone it will reflect in their work or lack thereof. I think it definitely is an overreach to block phone signals. My team doesn’t operate this way. We all get the work done without over-policing.
No. Why are we trying to control people? People will either meet deadlines or not. They will either be productive or not. If you have enough time to monitor them and their activities, perhaps it is you that needs some action taken against you. Let people get through stressful days however they see fit as long as they’re being productive. They’ll replace that time with smoke and bathroom breaks. People are not computers.
Why should anything be blocked? You’re either a responsible employee and can handle toys while getting you’re work done or not
Which you need to do is worry about your own business, if you aint a manager right? If you're not a manager, don't worry about it, make sure you're doing your job and everything will quit worrying about everybody else. What they're doing. Mind your own busiyes.
That's what schools do already. It just makes people more sly if anything. Take it from the person who DOS FCPS back during my schooling time because they restricted an app i liked on their server, + i had finals that day. They gave me an online tasks, I gave them an offline task for a full school day.
Im sure no one in a work environment would do something like that, but they'd definitely start using VPNs more and / or going to the restroom or walking out more often to get their media fix.
But, anyway. Taking someone's ability to do what they want with something they pay for + likely have an addiction to is like taking a vape from a chain smoker. It's good for them, but likely, the withdrawal will bring out an entirely different person.
