Work in BigLaw transactional side. I am thinking of asking for reduced hours because my family is spreading itself way too thin. Husband already does a lot and is super supportive but I want to get a better handle on things. Has anyone done this? Like even doing 75-80%, so I can have some time back for pick-up/drop offs and dinner prep, etc. Without feeling stressed and having to log back in at night. I am also contemplating going down to 60% to take care of my littles but want to try the 75-80.

I’ve never seen this work on the transactional side unless you’re a specialist. The only time I’ve seen it work well is if you have one set day off (like say you have Friday off every week and the firm actually respects it), otherwise it’s just the nature of transactional work that it doesn’t respect a strict 9-5 schedule. You might end up working evenings and getting paid less.

Yup, it’s amaaaazzing. There are still hard days but the WLB to salary ratio is incredible.

Wow that does sounds amazing! Thank you for all that information and it’s good to know that it is doable!

I very much considered doing this, and literally, right before I was going to have “the talk” with my team head, I was told I was being put up for partner. In retrospect, I am so thankful I didn’t ask for a reduced hours schedule because as I learned once I made partner, many attorneys at my Big Law firm were putting in far fewer hours than me and still making more than I would have made on a reduced hours schedule. If you think you may be up for a promotion at some point (or even if you don’t), I would suggest trying to dial it back a little bit in your current role before you volunteer to accept less pay.

Do you mean other partner attorneys at the firm? I am a few years off from being considered for partnership so that won’t be an option at this point. But good to know! I know the partner I work under has a target of 1200 hours for the year.

Someone in my group did this (dedicated extra day off so only worked four days a week). The group respected it and seemed to work well for them, but they eventually left the firm and stopped practicing law.

Make sure any arrangement is really tight and based on billable and/or hours worked. Basically you would be a paralegal or admin in the sense you should get overtime

I meant more so get it clearly in writing and don’t end up in a situation where you’re working more than you want without extra money. If that’s the goal

Often it just means you are available 24:7 still but you’re paid less
