I've always been in the public sector and my loans were forgiven about a year ago. It was the most amazing feeling ever. I have no plans to leave government work. Selling my soul for more cash isn't worth it - for me, it's always been more important to feel good about what I do. I get paid enough to pay my bills and that's all that matters to me.
100000000%. Just had 245k forgiven and I, too, will stay. Loan forgiveness AND a family who knows who I am.
Congratulations!!!!
So far it has. Knowing that my loans will be forgiven soon with no tax hit has brought me peace of mind
Thanks so much for responding and providing your perspective
I'm three years in and it's been worth it so far. Even though the work could be difficult (work with foster youth, DV survivors, etc), it's rewarding. Still have 7 years to go, but definitely looking forward to having $250k+ forgiven tax free.
About 50/50. I knew this is the work I wanted to do, but if I knew going into it that I would have to pay off $250k+ on a public interest salary, I probably wouldn't have joined the profession. Big law never enticed me and I could never see myself doing it to pay off loans.
Definitely worth it, and even with my loans forgiven I’m staying with the gov until I can be a solo or go in-house.
