I just stopped at “thought i cheated”
They are playing games with you. Imagine how worse it will be when and if you join this team
You’re right. I thought about that too. Maybe I dodged a bullet. I know they have 1 toxic guy on the team who said that but it sounds like everyone else including the HM was on the fence.
This is not even worth you thinking about. This is not a normal functioning team
They are showing you who they are
You thought it was good from the outside
But the interview got you to see the mess on the inside
There is nothing else to handle
Leave them people alone
Go elsewhere and prosper!
Oh no - I was going to say that I hope this isn’t from personal experience!

This makes me concerned. You just worked for free solving a problem they were having.
I think we need to standardize that people are paid for interviews And at least 3 hours per interview session.
They were verbal case prompts, unstructured and literally a short sentence. I answered trying to showcase my critical thinking skills. They ultimately passed on me bc my answer wasn’t structured enough. They were looking for a basic framework. But their prompt wasn’t very well thought out and my questions pointed out considerations they hadn’t thought of. One of them also gave me 10-15 questions rapid fire b2b.
Later on my mentor was going to reach out to their exec leader, and they freaked out. I called it off bc that wasn’t my intention. But they told me I should reapply in 6mo. and that I’m a strong candidate.
I feel like this doesn’t make sense. Interviews are imperfect hiring tools, and if anything, real experience working with an internal candidate should be more indicative of their future success on the team. Plus I said what if the HM leaves? He said he’ll put in a good word for me with the next HM. Except that’s what the last one/team did for me… but I still got put through wringer and their vote for me was excluded. So it was even harder for me.
At this point, how should I handle things? I genuinely like the group and believe in their mission. But it feels like the bar is set higher for me. It felt like they were nitpicking. The main interviewer who was adamant against me said during the interview that I likely won’t get it the first time and to keep trying. Felt weird to hear that, like he already made up his mind.

I'd pass on working there. If they treat you unfairly, say you cheated because you did well, won't accept positive feedback from people who have worked with you, they'll be a horrible employer. It's not worth it.
