I’ve been in the industry for 20 years and have my share of challenging personalities. Have you tried talking face to face with them about the issues? Do
You like the team you’re on? Can you switch teams? Do you like the agency overall? Usually when 1 person is a challenge, they are affecting others as well…and the problem fixes itself over time.
Completely agree with this
It is not a silly reason since agencies rely heavily on creative chemistry, a toxic partnership can lead to burnout and poor work. However, before quitting, try requesting a partner swap or discussing the friction with your Creative Director. If the culture protects the senior at your expense, then leaving is a valid move for your mental health.
Anything that impacts your happiness at work is a good enough reason to leave your agency. But like anything, it’s just one factor. Weigh it against what you like about the company. But it’s definitely not a stupid reason to consider a move.
Just start applying to other places unless you can afford to leave without something else lined up
Are they your manager?
Only you can answer that question. But in some ways, it means they won? Resilience is a worthy attribute in situations like this. I always ask myself “how do I know I won’t encounter the same thing somewhere else if I move on?” Then I realize adopting strategies to make it work for me is important bc I can only control how I behave, and not others… if you can find ways to recognize yourself for honing your resilience and looking beyond the current (temporary) situation, you can feel proud and in its own way - that brings greater happiness.
Rising Star
You should express your concerns to a copy supervisor. Maybe they can switch up the team or put you on a different brand.
Not if you like everything else about where you are (the benefits, other people, etc)… ask for a team transfer or whatever you need to not work with this person. Companies are big with many teams, you don’t have to be on one where you’re unhappy.
Everything (clients, projects, leadership, team structures, that annoying person on your team) goes away eventually. Depends on how miserable you are and whether a legitimately better option is on the table. I would not make a lateral move just to get away from one abrasive personality (there will be new annoyances at the next shop). Make your moves wisely.
What defines the bad relationship? Can it be solved?
If you choose to leave be sure to line something up first.
Chemistry is everything in the creative process
Every team I’m on, there’s got to be one person (minimum) who irks me. If its not internal, then its clients. If its not internal or clients then its a nightmare MLR team!!
