Yes I would’ve gone into it, but also I’ve never chased the awards and accolades. I’m here to get paid as much as I can in exchange for as few hours of my time as possible, and writing is the talent of mine that people seem to be willing to pay the most money for.
I will happily retire without a single award or accolade if I get to retire comfortably, healthfully, and surrounded by a large and happy family.
I got into the business at the prospect of having my ideas brought to life. The notion of winning an award never entered my mind. Are you by chance the product of a portfolio school?
Yikes. You guys are so pessimistic… I mean come on, we get to think big, work with incredibly talented people, and make things that the world sees. No, this industry is not perfect, but I genuinely think in the grand scheme of things I’m lucky to walk into a job every day where I get to solve different challenges creatively. Sure beats making cold calls.
Dedicate this one to you AD1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u5o582N3wOQ
Absolutely not.
Yes. They allowed me to make good money and have more job security. Through my job I get to travel all around the world and work with celebs and talented directors and artists. And from time to time I get to make some work I’m proud of.
Beats any other job I can think of.
💯
I think a big part of this answer depends on when you started. I entered the industry in the COVID years. I would not do it if I could go back. But for someone who has worked for the past few decades i can see the pros outweighing the cons overall.
Tbh I started noticing that a lot of the things that made my junior / dues-paying years in this business kinda fun and not completely soul-crushing started disappearing at least 1-2 years before covid. Plus all of a sudden, I’d talk to MAS grads and they’d be doing multiple internships after graduating like the amount of time and money they had to invest in getting a freakin junior creative job was getting bigger and bigger. Which is to say, I agree with you, 15 years in I don’t regret this career but knowing what I know, I wouldn’t have wanted to start in the business after like … 2018
I loved working in advertising until about ten years ago. Once the focus shifted away from great creative storytelling to ROI it’s been a slow painful death.
Yes, I get to make way more money than most designers i know, to take care of myself+my family, and handle my immigration stuff (awards, connections who are willing to write me letters, enough money to pay my attorney) without much support from my agency, and enough good work and experience that gives me the privilege to choose what places/brands I wanna work with.
Really it all depends on how much you saved by the end.
Yes, but I absolutely wouldn’t go into it if I were graduating now
No.
Every day until you’re 45 you mean.
Ageism
I would. It was incredible during its highest highs.
For me advertising served its purpose well.
Yes. But I would have stressed less, cared less, and worked less hours.
No. I should’ve got into a trade like welding
Rising Star
Imagine getting into advertising for awards and accolades
Knowing what I know now, I'd be a plumber.
Pro
I am glad I did. No doubts. But I wouldn’t for what it is becoming now.
I never really got where I wanted in this industry, so hard to say. You can learn SO MUCH but with how hard it is to get a great gig and how easy it is to lose it, probably not worth it.
Yes. My career has been great and I make a lot of money.
And soon we’ll be able to make whatever we can imagine with AI. It’s going to get even better for people with actual ideas and vision.
Probably, no. I love the job itself, but the industry is unnecessary turbulent. With that much drama and effort, I probably could have made more money elsewhere.
