There are other ways to give back to the community without actually working in the community to earn a check. Possibly pro bono, mentoring, speaking at schools, donating funds (you have the means because you do have the hefty paycheck). I think you have the best of both worlds being able to earn a nice paycheck and still be able to give back. Being a social worker or public defender is a noble job but you have to do what you like as well. Not only that but at the end of the day it’s also nice to be able to provide for your immediate family and expose them to things most ppl in communities of color will never experience. I think this is critical because the more we are exposed to, the more we know to pass down. We cant share what we don’t know or haven’t experienced.
My sisters are both social workers in the city we grew up in so I feel the same way. My mother basically let me know over Easter weekend that she’s proud of the money I make but wishes I was more involved in my actual community or giving back in some way. I try not to take it personally, but it’d be nice if she was as excited for me as she is for them.
Yeah you sold out. Just kidding. Your allowed to experience things in your own ways. Although you chose this career doesn’t mean you have to stay in it forever if you don’t want to. I’m also sure you can use this experience to yours or someone else’s advantage. Sometimes it takes being on the other side to learn somethings. Good, Bad or indifferent make it count and move on to next chapter in your life. Thanks for sharing 🫶🏾🤎
I work for a corporation about an hour away but I also do pro Bono work in my community , give legal counsel in my community I also still live in the community and I take the good with the bad. It’s not all roses when you intentionally give back people will think you think you are better or assume you make crazy money but we have to help black people however we can
Mine doesn't, but it pretends it does. Some of the partners are still pretty racist and don't have a clue about DEI and it's really obvious
Part of the reason I went into BL was bc my friends were all in PI with low-paid jobs and had financial troubles and I felt like our group needed at least one bougie friend in case we fell on hard times. I feel better knowing I can help them financially. Be there for your brother and your/his family, support them and other Poc.
We don't really have much POC's that come to our firm, so I can't tell for certain if my firm does support our communities. Is this a red flag?
I do have a community of POC at mine, but my job is to protect the rich. However, as an immigrant, I feel the burden to be the provider for my family and help retire my parents. At the same time, I would take a massive pay cut to do social work or public interest law in a heartbeat. But then also everyone can afford to take a pay cut. I wouldn’t feel guilty about the path you take.
Can you use your money and help others? Invest in worthy causes?
