View your career in steps and plan a few steps ahead. Which job will do a better job of getting you to the next step, and the step after that, and perhaps even the step after that. Don't worry about 10k one way or another if you'll have bigger salaries and career security in the long run.
Agree completely with this. While I assume it to not be the case based on the OP’s question, sometimes you can do great work at average agencies and sometimes great agencies have accounts where it’s difficult to do great work. Don’t just look at the agency; consider the account as well and what that experience will do for you. Try to diversify early in your career.
It’s always worth chasing the best work. Always. You’ll be more fulfilled and excited to go to work each day. I know I could be earning way more at another place, but it wouldn’t be half as enjoyable. Life is about more than $. And besides, that’ll come later the better the work you make.

I hate to sound like Mr. Wonderful from Shark Tank, but it is all about the money. Especially in the ad world where that “…great agency you’ve always wanted to work at…” would drop you in a heartbeat whenever it wants to.
Ok. I’m wrong.
Not unless I'm making 500k and they're topping out at 490.
No
Neither!! This is THE perfect opportunity to negotiate a higher offer.
Ie I would love to join your team because of XYZ. However, the conditions have to make sense for me to forego my current opportunity [list some benefits that make it compelling for you to stay]. I will consider the offer if you increase the salary by 15k.
Ask for more than what you actually want because agency HR will always low ball you.
A UX Directlr I respected told me only switch jobs if they offer +20% of your current salary or more, which I also agree with!
Depends what percentage 10k is to me at the time of the ask.
Probably not, though. There would have to be ton of value added on the table.
Yes, 10k is pennies after taxes
Yeah, and 10k is pennies to companies paying people to make them money. Man, why are we all so brainwashed into thinking this kind of stuff is okay?
Yes. To answer everyone saying it’s all about the money, you’re not thinking about the job AFTER that
Yes, I will take a 10k pay cut to work at Wieden.
I’ve made similar moves. If you think the $10k drop at a better agency will result in a $60k raise after a year or two of good portfolio work, I see it as an investment.
That 10k investment could produce work that pays off ten fold in a couple years. If it’s a high profile client, I’d consider that. You make 10k freelancing in two weeks, and big work gets big gigs.
Depends on your salary. Would I go from 90 to 80? No. 180 to 170? Probably
Yes
If it’s Wieden
Depends on where you are in your career. Mid to senior, I’d say yes… but only if 1) it’s a lateral move, not a promotion 2) it’s in a state with lower cost of living, or if you can adjust your own budget 3) it’s a dream work, not a “dream agency”
Are they also investing in you in other ways? More holidays, moving costs, professional development, etc? That could make up the 10k in my opinion.
Personally, tough because the market is sooooo hot right now — hard to justify why they won’t be willing to pay
Agreed right now people are paying are calling with 40K plus bumps to get what they want. Develop a niche skill set and you can write your ticket.
No brainer. Yes.
Now that I’m old, I think in terms of career longevity. Would this move set you up for a better job the next round? Will it take you where you want to go? I took a slight pay cut to take an in house position from a tech company bc going client side was my ultimate goal. There are some really good agencies that are basically feeders to really cool companies.
I was in a similar position and negotiated as much as I could to close that gap. Ended up going with the dream agency for slightly less $ and I have no regrets
Depend on how much you make to start with. Where do you have a better future? Too many unknowns.
