I wouldn’t think so? Your experience as a Director doesn’t go away just because you did something else for awhile. This issue would never even cross my mind.
Oh wow, this is something I would need to consider. I just posted that I am looking to leave management to go to an individual contributor role. How long did you stay in the individual role before wanting to go back to management? Would you make the same decision if you had to do it all over again?
I have been consulting as an individual contributor / project manager for over 5 years (Covid definitely impacted plans)
I thought I had to have something after my director job was eliminated and replaced with 10 new roles. (Went from great to toxic environment pretty much overnight)
Knowing what I know now, I should have taken the unemployment and sought out another director job. Instead of taking whatever I could get.
I should have tried to find a business mentor/coach to help with my confidence (post toxic environment) and someone who could help me take my list of skills and direct me to another similar level role type . The separation company was like what do you want to do with your life? There is no way you could have been doing X. (Which I was).
I needed this route to heal from the toxic environment.
I miss being transformative in my roles. I miss personnel development.
Right now, I’m in a project management role where it’s gotten transactional and mundane. And I’m frustrated at the pay ceiling at this level.
So, I’m looking at options.
I think you will be fine. I actually look at decision to back off of work for personal reasons shows good decision making. Just brush up on the current environment and practice your interview skills especially around your decision to temporarily leave management
