Not all jobs are like this. I’ve been there, you should leave, but make sure you leave with another job lined up. You can negotiate more when you are currently employed. When they ask you why you want to leave, tell them that you would like a job that allows you to grow more. Don’t criticize your current boss. The practice of law is quite small.
Moving does seem like the best approach. I think networking and moving to a larger firm might be better. At least in a larger firm you may be able to work with different partners and find a mentor among the partners in your practice area
Going through this now. Look for another job. Do not leave until you have something lined up. If anyone asks why you’re leaving, say the move is for career growth. If you get interviews with other firms try to reach out on LinkedIn to juniors and mid levels of those firms to get a feel for what mentorship is like there. It’s the luck of the draw unfortunately.
Echoing some other commenters, contrary to popular belief, larger law firms may in fact be better. There are more structures in place, more quality control when it comes to workplace interactions and structural job/ income security that reduces some of the stress, and more flexibility in for whom you can work, which gives you more ability to avoid assholes that still make it through.
In my personal experience larger firms have been far better for career growth than smaller ones. More resources, more people to interact with and learn from, and more opportunities to find a niche. Small firms can be a true nightmare if you end up stuck with a group of people who neither succeeded at playing nice at a larger place nor had the guts to go solo.
The comments above hit the nail on the head. I echo getting a new job before leaving this one. I was in a similar position and decided to leave with nothing lined up but the market is terrible and recruiters will read too much into your leaving the firm that early into your start. Small law firms are notorious for this, unfortunately. Not all great lawyers make great employers/managers.
DON’T send out resumes. Your employer WILL find out. The industry is small. There’s lots of good headhunters out there. Work with them If you’re employed.
It’s fine to send out resumes unless you’re in a very small market, and most people aren’t. Don’t scare them unnecessarily.
I am so sorry this happened to you. I’ve only done big law but there are a holes everywhere. They should be in the minority at any company. If that’s not the case, look for a job and quit the day you clear conflicts. Sending you well wishes. Don’t let them scare you out of the profession. With time, your confidence will grow. And you WILL find your people. You got this.
