50-60 isn’t bad
Depends. 50-60 in work that stirs you positively is great. 50-60 in work that is driving you to madness, not so great (though even true down to 40 hours…)
Which practice are you in? That’s a very high salary
base is $215k. added $10k for bonus.
Yes. I’m a Manager and my base is $180,000 in Texas. I probably work 25-30 hours per week though.
@ M1 - Third Year Manager.
@ A&M - I’m fully chargeable.
At B4 I was making 190 working 50-60, new role (corporate strategy) I’m making 160 working 35. Easiest trade off I’ve ever made. Also upside in role is higher than B4
Money-wise my company shares salary bands per level and it’ll be financially worth it for most of my career. Only caveat is a high-performing partner will make more than a comparable position at my firm - but given it’s a publicly traded company, I’ll have shares and won’t have a buy-in. If I play cards right I can get to the comparable position much quicker
Tons of factors here (like what do your expenses look like being most important: family obligations, housing, etc. basically critical expenses)…but, making some broad assumptions like If it is truly 60 hours down to 40 hours, and you’re burning out in consulting, then yes. The opportunity though, at that pay cut, must also be a very good stepping stone itself in the direction you want to go career-wise
So many ways to cut 10-20 hours a week and keep your 225k, as long as you aren’t going for promotion.
Rising Star
No. Source, that's what I make and how much I work on average. But I like the work.
u can do better
Yes, especially if there’s equity involved
Salary is fixed but hours are inherently variable. You sure you can get down to 40 hours, and it’s consistent? That could easily be a lie by the other place. I’d make the lateral move or maybe 5-10% pay cut if I was reasonably sure, otherwise I’d keep the cash and just coast in my current role.
Would this imply a downgrade in level or interest?
You might get bored
Yes
50-60 hours is sweet.
Depends on what your spouse makes and if you want more time to take care of the kids.
