ZS 🐟 - I have an interview coming up for a consulting role. Apparently first round is a half hour behavioral + half hour case. Does anyone have advice/tips on how to best prepare for the case? I'm new to consulting so haven't prepped for them before.

Case = they will present a handful of slides via zoom and ask you to interpret some charts of data, note any observations, do some simple calculations (revenue, costs, etc), and likely ask something about what company X should do given what they've shared about the data and background. It is relatively straightforward and hard to prep for, but I agree prepping with case in point or something else will help your problem solving skills look polished.

Behavioral = 5-6 questions asking you to share experiences from your education or career, they will be looking out for your communication skills and coherent story for every answer, and each question will be asking for different things like examples of good team skills, working hard, managing client demands, and managing quality. Think of a few anecdotes ahead of time that showcase these things.

Can confirm for anyone who comes back to this, it was not a pharma case

I had my final round last month (Associate position), was a rejection but the feedback I got was to better talk about my project management experience, team work, and be more structured in my casing. I always thought I was better at casing than behavioural but they told me I passed behavioural but not the case interview. I think it's important to understand that it's hard to get a perfect picture of you in a few 30minute interviews, so just do your best!

Reviewing and practicing with online case examples from prep websites or reading through Case in Point should get you through the first round just fine.

Thanks! I hadn't heard of case in point, I'll check it out!

Try to find some example consulting case videos online to get familiar with how these flow and what you’re expected to do. Here’s a few things you’ll have to check the boxes on:

1. Is structured when sharing their thoughts

2. Can do math relatively quickly (and knows when to just use an approximate figure e.g 699 x 29 is roughly 700 x 30)

3. Can draw insights from charts/tables accurately and relatively quickly

4. Can communicate clearly

like

If you state what you're doing, you will be fine. For example
OP: I'm multiplying the cost and # of units. Which is 687 x 27. I will round to 700 and 30 to get ~21k for the total cost.
Interviewer: I will need an exact number for this
OP: ok. Can I please have a second to work this out
Interviewer: sure

As an interviewer, one tip that sometimes gets lost. - Please, please take a moment to think about your answer before you go through it.

Sometimes candidates feel crazy pressure to say something quickly. Trust me that it’s exactly the opposite - a bit of a breather can do wonders for your thought process and make you sound like a star. No shame in asking for a moment to collect your thoughts

Best of luck!

First round will likely be a market sizing case. Remember some principle estimates you’d make and keep them in the back of the mind in case the occasion occura
