[Relatively] common route is boutique consulting -> equity research -> VC/HF.
Boutique consulting -> VC is less common but does happen especially for smaller / more nascent funds. E.g. Northpond Ventures
Consulting -> PE/GE and Consulting -> IB -> PE/GE exits are rare. Usually only portfolio ops roles. The few investor roles that pop up are pretty well populated with MD/PhDs and MBBers. E.g. Blackstone Life Sciences
The common thread will ALWAYS be networking. Cannot stress that enough. Job openings will >90% of the time be sourced via word of mouth for investor roles. You should try connecting with headhunters from Oxbridge, Juno, Glocap as well, as openings sometimes pop up through those channels. Prep for a long game and warm the fire a year early as seats open up intermittently.
Thanks! It seems that biotech ER job postings always are asking for advanced degrees (PHD/MD) - do you suggest emailing the teams directly?
Check out transaction advisory shops like locust walk or back bay advisors. They probably have good exits to buy side
It’s a bit like both. Sweatshop type atmosphere
