Start fresh at new firm and be impressive as hell I was in this situation and first impressions in big law are everything
Seconded.
You are going to have to deal with it. Get ahead of them removing you. You will do well at a different firm. People form opinions. Extremely unfair opinions. I have been in many many firms. None of them will tell you I am a bad associate. Invariably they all will tell you I am one of the best in terms of attitude, ability to solve problems and what not.
Yet finally one firm did do say that I was not good at what I do. It all came down to the first assignment I was on at this firm. I did what I usually do. Found a way out of a problem. The partner/senior associate reviewing my work were mediocre to say the least. They rely on their standing in the state to get their cases through. I tend to look at statistics and how the judges ruled in the past to determine what and how to position things. I got a terrible review for arguments that were really good.
Finally, I had to leave the firm. Before you get pushed out, find something and do better.
You leave. Don't wait and waste further valuable time at a crucial stage in your career. Start updating your resume and connecting with recruiters. Begin looking now.
Having a good reputation and support from people around and especially above you is everything in BigLaw. First impressions matter tremendously. They can make or break your caree. Once you've missed on that at one place, it is extraordinarily difficult (not impossible, but close to it) to build back to a good level. Second chances are rare.
You didn't make the strongest first impression where you are, and that is what it is. If you have done the work to improve and are better now, you can make a strong first impression at a new place. A fresh start is what you need. Go and get it.
you all are amazing thanks
How big is this firm practice area? If you are at a big practice area you can try working with others before leaving and it’s also possible people won’t even remember you.
Any stories from coming back from a middling first impression?
Did that once, but still when clients left (for non performance reasons like budget cut backs) I was also the first one to go. If you have a lot of work. Stay. If you are struggling even a bit to get hours run! Even if you come back, you have to watch your back.
