The most productive thing that you can do is suggest that your colleague have a very direct conversation with their manager about whether it not this PIP is meant actually improve performance. In my cases a PIP is merely a CYA formality once the decision to release someone has been made.
The manager may not come out and say it, but a very cold response would indicate that they are not emotionally invested in keeping this person on board, and if that's the case the PIP acts more like a severance period, and your colleague should use this time to polish their resume and start applying.
If the manager is on board with helping this person succeed then there is no risk in you trying to help. If the manager is not on board you both are wasting your time trying to meet the terms.
Reducing their workload while being asked to improve their performance might be problematic from an employment law perspective depending on the state that you’re in. Your coworker should try to document any reduction in responsibilities and talk to an employment lawyer.
In most cases, a PIP is simply a step in the process to separation. Your coworker may not be able to crawl out of this, even if you (and others) feel that the PIP is unworthy. If anything, it may be worth telling that coworker to start getting their resume in order and start exploring what options might be available at other companies.
So many companies have adopted PIP quotas. Managers are forced to stack rank employees as a means to lower cost, regardless of your actual performance. Meta does this exceptionally well.
My advice would be to encourage them to start interviewing asap. It’s very difficult to survive a PIP, unless your manager truly wants to save you.
your definition of "does this exceptionally well" and my definition are veryyyyyy different lol
Keep in mind a company can make up anything they want to get rid of an employee and pip is best way to do that. Metrics is just an excuse. The best thing you can do is to tell your coworker find a new job immediately. Nobody is meant to survive a pip. Also stay out of your coworker spot light. The job market is horrible right now.
Yes I agree
A PIP is just HR building their paper trail so litigation can't be brought against them for termination of that employee. Realistically, you don't get put on a PIP if anyone within management has your back. It's a vote of no-confidence. Your teammate's time is much better spent using this 90 days as a paid chance to find a new job.
If they want someone gone then they'll find a nice legal, airtight way to get rid of that person. I've seen people work ridiculous hours to satisfy requirements for a PIP that was never intended to be passed, then if they pull of a miracle and pass the PIP, they get laid off anyway. At least they earned themselves a severance package.
Once you even get a hint that a PIP could be coming, brush up your resume and consider your time there finished.
Probably best to just get them in contact with anyone in your network.
Hey there sorry to bother might even be in the wrong asking but any guys know any team that be willing to hire for an apprentice in the oc area? I have my son truck with insurance driving and distance is no issue just wanna get into plumbing I know it’s where the mindset and money is.
I think you might be replying to the wrong thread.
Help them find a new job in your network.

Developer, you're kinda stuck. If you're senior enough you might help, but you may lose a lot of political capital. If you're bold enough you could be saving a job, possibly a career. Someone, in fact, a couple of someones, stuck up for me and saved me from a PIP and I couldn't be more grateful. I got five more good years out of a gig that could have-would have, ended in days. They saw in me, what I only thought I had and helped me showcase it, where the bosses just saw someone slow. Maybe you could be that advocate, but you could be sticking out two necks as well. Godspeed. 💙☮️
