A friend of mine just moved into an apartment complex. They have a public bbq grill and one of those “big green egg” grills. Is there any proper etiquette they should be aware of? Besides the obvious clean up after yourself.

Wow, that must be a nice complex. At any of the apartments I lived at a fancy grill like that wouldn't have lasted a weekend without someone stealing it! I guess I would try to ask someone if there's any rule for the grill, like is there a schedule where you have to reserve it or something. Otherwise, I guess if no one is using it you're free to fire that baby up.

Do they have any kind of way to reserve it? I have a green egg, and sometimes I’ll use it for an all day project. It would be tough if someone starts using it for a 12 hr cook the day someone else was planning to use it

You need to use lump charcoal and no lighter fluid. Lighter fluid will get into the clay and seep into the food. If it is a public grill, my guess is that it has already been ruined. Sorry to say that.

Wait, that is crazy because the big 'green eggs' are smokers and those are usually multiple hour time commitments. I mean my dad and I smoke steaks and fish in a shorter amount of time, but is there a sign out for them to use it? What if your friend decides they want to cook for 10 hours in that thing but someone else wants to use it at the same time? I guess it is first come first serve and they will have to figure it out. Maybe suggesting a sign-out for it would be helpful?

In my experience living in complexes with shared grills the only thing we ever really did was make sure that we cleaned up after ourselves and the grill was really clean. Hardly anyone ever used it besides us to be honest but wejust made sure to clean up after we used it

Hey guys just wanted to update yall it’s a “kamado joe”. It looks like the green egg thing. But I guess it’s a different brand? Bbq area Looks like not a lot of people use it so far. But you guys were right looks like you have to sign it out. If you’re planning to use it for a extended period of time
