Ask questions.... ask all the questions. If you don't ask the questions you won't get the answers. If you don't get the answers you can't do the work. If you can't do the work you can't keep the job.

The learning doesn't stop just because you aren't in school anymore.

TBH that was my entire staff one year. It was part of my senior one year. Prioritize your questions, keep yourself organized, and you'll be fine. Just remember that you can tell people that I'm unsure of XYZ, but not, I don't get it all (as a blanket statement). Go in with targeted questions to get better answers. Bring a pad.

It passes.

Everybody feels that. Be ok with it.

Ask questions. If they dont take the time to help you, they dont belong in their roles

like

Look through what was asked of you, make a list of questions, and ask the senior to sit down with you and talk it through. Having all the questions at once is easier for a senior and we would rather you ask instead of waste time, force all the work to be redone and screw the budget.

like

Yes! Don't be afraid and ask questions! Everyone's expectations are low and you can only exceed them!!

like

I agree with above but also This happens more than you can think. Shit rolls downhill and always try to give you things and overwhelm you. Just gotta know your limit

like

Yeah part of public accounting is figuring out what the hell is going on half the time. The only difference between experienced seniors/staff and new people is that the experienced people know what questions to ask and how to look for the answers. You'll get there soon enough don't worry :)

like

Haha welcome to public accounting. It always starts that way but it will get easier. We kinda expect that from a new associate, so don't feel like everyone expects you to come in knowing how to do everything. It's a process.

like

If you do not know how to do something, ask for clarification or a procedure document. Nothing wrong with that, are all. Only a month in? They are expecting you to be coming to them. I agree with the previous statement about having your questions already laid out before meeting. That shows organization and respect for their time.
If you don't feel overwhelmed at times, you aren't stretching. If you aren't stretching, you aren't growing, professionally.

Transfer to channel 2. You'll still be confused but paid better.

One thing I can say from personal experience is that you look way worse when you don't ask questions. There is a big difference between a staff who asks questions and gets it right the first time than someone who doesn't ask the question and messes everything up and has to do it over again. Please just ask, you don't want to be that staff.

@SA1, I'd say the learning actually starts because you aren't in school anymore

I'd say this is normal after only a month in. There's definitely a learning curve. I felt the same way during my first year. Sometimes you have to fake it until you make it. Eventually it started clicking. Now I'm a senior.

I work through a contractor, and was hired 2yrs ago to be a Systems Test Engineer II. They decided last minute to make me a Software Content Manager, but kept my title as is since it was supposed to be a 6mo rotation. I’m still an SCM, and am taking on leadership roles in the group. How do I ask for a title change and pay increase to reflect what I actually do? Do I ask my contract house, or my NASA mgmt? Should I ask to make the pay retroactive since I was hired to do one thing, but do another?
