Change the tax code and nobody cares. Change a national park and people lose their minds. Welcome to America.

Both are horrendous.

Because to most people, taxes are really confusing. So they don’t understand the full ramifications of the bill. They just hear the Republicans say “cuts!” and “you’ll pay less tax” and they are sold. Dumping a national park is much more concrete

like

Ok so there’s your issue, you’re using Facebook as a barometer of what people care about.

like

Wait who said nobody cares about the tax reform? The squawking heads won’t stop

like

The tax reform bill has a 29% popularity rating with Americans....I wouldn’t say no one cares. They unfortunately just won’t get their chance to show you how much they care until mid terms

like

And the tax bill opens up the Alaska national wildlife refuge to drilling. Like we need more drilling now?

Any of you actually located in Utah to actually know the details of National Park? I am and the amount of disinformation by both sides is alarming. Both Obama and Trump did it the wrong way. Neither of them came and toured the area prior to the designation/changes they implemented. Obama mostly ignored the people in Utah and Trump only did it to get Orrin Hatch to run again in Utah. Politics in general are a mess and while I think the President should be able to designate national parks they should have to be ratified by house/senate to keep proper check/balance

like

I don’t disagree that it can be somewhat of a barometer but it is by no means indicative of the average person. It maybe be more of a reflection of you, individually, than society as a whole.

PwC2 - The Antiquities act gives the President unilateral authority to designate national landmarks and monuments. BTW, Bears Ears and Grand Staircase are national monuments, not national parks. The Antiquities Act was passed during the height of the Progressive Era to prevent the rampant avarice of that era's Robber Barons and unregulated industry from destroying America's precious wild lands. Before Trump, no president has used the Antiquities Act to take away public land (the idea of which is sickening). Make no mistake - Trump is not shrinking these monuments to "give them back to the people". He is giving the state more control over these lands, which has quite openly indicated will hand over to extraction industry businesses for "development", the exact thing the Antiquities Act was passed to protect us from. When these lands fall under eventual commercial control, they will be private, and thus inaccessible for recreation, shutting off the American People's access from some of the the most pristine hiking, climbing and fishing in our country. We haven't even gotten to discussing what this will do to very sensitive habitats. On the matter of neither Obama or Trump doing it correctly, I can understand why that might make sense, but it's unrealistic to expect the POTUS - and the infrastructure that is required to travel with him - to travel to these areas. That's why we have a federal bureaucracy that can study this issue extensively and engage multiple stakeholders. Obama's administration literally considered protecting Bears Ears for years, and engaged the native community, for which the area has special significance. Taking away public lands from the American People and setting them on a path for development by mining companies is quite literally one of the only things Trump has accomplished in 11 months in office, and he did it with out engaging the native community. Since a few people in this conversation were wondering why this is significant, and why this matters, I wanted to share what I know.

I scroll through my Facebook feed and nobody has said anything about tax reform. People are freaking out over the national park

like

I think that Facebook can be good barometer of what the average person, at least in my friends, cares about. I also read the news on cnn, bbc, fox, etc daily and the tax reform has always been buried.

like

I wish people could start caring LESS about the tax bill... work is so much more draining lately lol. But seriously, the whole situation is a hot mess and the national park situation is just as bad.

like

I went to school in Utah and have family there. I was there when Obama created the parks. I agree that the whole thing was done wrong by both guys. I was just commenting on how the tax reform which will affect everyone in the US is getting less publicity than the national park which doesn't really affect anyone outside of one state.

Meanwhile ey just released a tax reform analyzer spreadsheet that compares current law to both the house and Senate bills . I dropped in my numbers and house bill lowers my federal tax by 4400 per year and Senate bill lowers it by 9900 per year. And that's with losing SALT deduction and 3.5 l of my property tax deduction.

I care about both issues, but one is a lot more easy to discuss than the other obviously. Don't get so worked up OP.

Basically, I’m hoping the Native American groups sue the fuck out of the government and it drags on so long that Trump is out of office and his successor can reverse the decision
