A partner just followed me on Instagram and now I feel like I need to delete half my life. It hadn’t hit me how strange it is that the same people who judge my billables and deadlines now have access to my vacation photos and sarcastic memes. I’m torn between blocking them (which feels obvious) and curating my feed into something corporate and boring. Mixing personal and professional worlds is uncomfortable. Do you keep coworkers off your socials entirely, or curate everything to be safe?

I keep a work contacts and coworkers entirely off my socials; I also have all my settings so followers/friends/people can’t just follow me without my approval first.

Is your insta not set to private? If not, it should be. My insta is very boring and is comprised of pictures of me and my wife and kids, but it’s still private and people can’t just follow me without me accepting.

I’m a small law firm owner (8 employees) and I absolutely do not follow any of them on social media. That’s crossing a line in my opinion

like

I would set socials to private and block them.

I’ve seen partners use social media to monitor their associates. It’s not so harmless.

Exactly. I have also seen other lawyers use a social to have attorneys from a large case.

can u block them? if they ask, just say u deactivated ur account? def would set to private going forward if not already

If I was you scrub your page. Especially if your end game is partnership. My last firm part of my job was background on all employees. What you did in college should not represent you today. Why isn't your page private in the first place? Stop putting all your business out in the world. You can say you were hacked and start a new page as private. Don't accept his request. Be strategic. Do you remember the questionnaire the state bar sent out when you applied for your license? Keep in mind partnership is along the same lines. The firm will want to know exactly who they're dealing with. ⚜️

Was interviewing with a firm and soon after receiving an offer, learned of bad culture/toxic partners in the practice group from a couple of associates who recently lateraled from the firm. I turned the offer down. A partner that I clicked with while interviewing reached out asking me why I turned down the offer. Should I be honest and relay what I heard?

I’m in-house at a small company (60 people), started right out of law school about 5 years ago. We had a legal team of 5 then. Everyone has left and we just hired a new GC. I went from $70k to $100k a little over a year ago. I am expecting an offer from a firm doing business law work but think this might be an opportunity to go to my current employer and ask for a significant raise, with new offer in hand. Any thoughts or advice going into this?
