Wether or not it's what you deserve, I can't comment on. But $50K for a junior AD role is about right, depending on size and statute of the agency.
This.
Have been on the hiring side; I can't speak to how HR looks at the previous experience but on the team side there's always concern about how much of the experience translates to the Canadian market. I don't think it's fair, but that is the experience of immigrants in this country. I brought it up with my parents (also immigrants) when we were hiring someone who had more experience than me to work under me in junior position and their response was: they're lucky you're letting them get their foot in the door. Again, I don't think that's necessarily the right attitude and I definitely still have my concerns about it, but hopefully the move up will be faster.
This feels like a pretty clear case of bias or even discrimination (not sure which is definitionally more appropriate but either way it’s BS).
It’s really easy for me to say push back, even call them out (how many agencies are talking a big game about diversity and inclusion right now). But I know it’s a super precarious time, and can’t even imagine how much more stressful it is as a new Canadian. I guess I’d just say know your worth, and that your gut is right that your getting low balled here.
Was in the same situation as you with more experience and got paid even less 🤷🏻♀️
I was in desperate need of a visa to stay so I took the 34k offer on the table and moved as soon as I got enough awards a year later to double my salary on my 2nd agency here.
50k for a junior is really good
Hard to say without knowing your book. Perhaps they’re worried about a potential language barrier and your skills translating? It mostly sounds like they’re low balling though.
Let me start with “sorry” I have seen that behaviour in all industries here in Toronto. I’m also an immigrant but lucky enough to move and start at the same Sr level I left my country... not my wife’s case with a Ph.D. but not great language skills. Keep trying and don’t allow this first step to letting you down. In 1 or 2 years, you should be back to your seniority. Target agencies that embrace diversity 😉 check their LinkedIn and look at their leadership team...
I was and am in a similar situation. Have a lot more experience than you and been contracting or freelancing for 3 years, and paid even less than what I was making in my home country. Yes there is bias and agencies are a little too conservative in hiring those that are new. It’s fucked up. Sometimes it’s not about your book but where you’re from. My friends in the states were shocked when they heard this.
The best way to get your foot in the door is to freelance or take the role you’ve been offered. Move up next year.
