Coach
People get hired to do a job, not to have a career. If you want more out of life, you need to map out what that is, and then engage your EVP if you think they can help.
It’s not up to your EVP to make your career plan. It’s up to you. Your EVP should be willing and able to help, but they are not in charge of your next steps at an agency or organization.
I am sorry to hear that, it would definitely make me feel unappreciated as well. But like the person above said, its their job to help you with your career plan but not necessarily plan it out for you. I would instead go back with a plan of where you want to be and where you want to end up and ask how they can help you get there.
Many thanks to the three folks who took the time to respond with clear, concise feedback. It was very illuminating to me. I have always been under the impression the manager is the one who has a plan for the department structure (we're about to have a big org change) and sees who's poised to evolve into new positions/promotions. I know I have a plan for my team members and how they will grow into new positions that I am hoping to create. Thank you for opening this new door of thought and helping me to create more agency for myself. Much appreciated.
