After several years of hard work as an AA, I’ve been promoted and am now assisting with reviewing applications to replace the vacant AA position. Most of the applicants have not provided a resume or a cover letter. This concerns me. I want to know that they can put together a sentence, can use proper grammar, are comfortable with a computer, etc. Are my expectations too high?

Not at all. Does the job listing require a resume and cover letter? That seems extremely bizarre to me that people aren't already providing that. That seems pretty baseline, I wouldn't change your expectations at all.

I think the fact that it isn’t a requirement matters. Job searching in today’s landscape can be quite tedious and there is lot of conflicting advice people get. One common sentiment I’ve seen out there is cover letter’s arent read by many recruiters/hiring managers even if they are required, which makes some reticent to waste time on one. So if they aren’t explicitly required, people wont bother. If this is an expectation it should be made clear imo, I would amend the posting to require it.

I don't think your expectations are too high at all. I think you want to find someone who is competent and can do the job well. If I were in your shoes I would be just as concerned as you are OP.

No. You are not expecting too much. I think there are individuals who are confused between being a Receptionist and being an Administrative Assistant. Maybe they feel answering calls and providing customer service doesn’t require a resume and cover letter. Irregardless, it is expected that if you are applying for a position of any kind, you need to represent yourself with a proper resume. (KICKRESUME is a fantastic tool for resumes and cover letters. It’s worth getting the monthly subscription.) When you post jobs as the employer you can also include in the job posting that applications that do not attach a resume and cover letter will not be considered.

PS Congrats on your promotion!

Thank you! Unfortunately, I am not the ultimate decision-maker and it is not technically a requirement-however, the fact that so many applicants did not put in the effort to include one says a lot. It certainly says a lot to me.

As a medical administrative assistant and someone who just completed their HR management studies i can assure you that you are not asking for too much. Out of curiosity how does someone apply for a job within your organization without the basic requirements (resume, cover letter) I think that's very unprofessional and it says a lot about those persons applying. It's as if they are not trying and feel the position should just be handed to them because they are already internal (guessing on the internal thing) Anyway internal or not I just feel that presentation, professionalism and first impressions are key assets to begin being considered for any job.

I don't think you're asking too much but check the program used to apply for the position. Maybe they're sending both requirements and the program not picking it up or broken because I can't imagine anyone applying for a job without providing at least a resume.

I don't thing you're asking too much at all. It's how jobs work. Where is the job posting? I'm interested! And I have a resume and cover letter, with lots of experience!

No. What your seeing is the same thing we all are seeing at the levels. It seem like missing information or “please see resume” keep popping up on our intake and onboarding forms. I do understand the applicants perspective though. How many times do they have to enter the same information that they have answered a trillion times when applying. Also when they upload resumes why should they have to reenter the information they already uploaded. It does make it easier on our ends to have quick reference sheets but is it putting the best possible employee off from applying?!!? Makes ya wonder.

I personally don’t read cover letters and I know many employers who don’t. It’s such a waste of time. That’s what the resume is there for. We don’t need people telling us how great they are in a cover letter. Your experience and credentials in your resume show it. A cover letter just states how great you would be because of a,b, and c. Well all that is in the resume. And employers who do read them have too much time on their hands.

I messed up my screenshare in a meeting with 2 colleagues and showed my personal email that had scheduling info for my onsite interviews with another company. I just finished what I thought was the final round of interviews for a job that I really want. Everything has been going extremely well. The recruiter just called to tell me that they want me to do one more round, though. This will make 8 interviews total, including a full case study presentation to 4 people. Should I be worried? I have an interview for an in house position (only attorney) at a small non-profit focused on conservation easements. I am a transactional associate at a mid sized law firm. The prospect of freedom from the billable hour and contributing to meaningful work are the draws. The cons are that while the salary at the non-profit would only be slightly less than what I am making now, pay increases and opportunities for advancement will be much less than where I am now.
