After two months of interviews, they're lowballing me with an offer of just $115K when I had already asked for $130K. They won't budge at all, and I'm ready to walk. Has anyone here flat-out refused an offer that didn't honor your value? How did it go?

If you have other options, then pursue them. But offers are hard to come by nowadays, much less good offers. Do the math on what you get after tax for that $15K gross difference (depending on if you have state income tax as well as federal income tax). And see if it's worth you walking away for that amount if you have no other offers and are not already in a role that is paying the bills.

Yea i had a firm promise me 135k and then give me 110k with absolutely no budging. I walked.

It depends on if how much you can afford to extend your job search. If you are currently employed or have decent savings, you have more leverage to walk away. But if that's not the case, and you end up spending 2 more months or longer before you get another offer, you'll be missing out on more than $15k by not having a paycheck at all. Also, there's no guarantee that the next job offer you might get will be $130k or more.

So, if you can afford to take that risk, then walk away. But if you need the job, it might be better to take the offer for now and continue to search for something better in your free time.

I've noticed that too lately. PM jobs were paying 130 to 160 here are now 110 to 130

I’d take it and keep looking. Receiving an offer isn’t that easy anymore … I’ve been without a job for a year and three months applying daily and interviewing 2-3 times a week and no offers

Me too.

Your value is one thing. What they see is another. If you don't have mouths to feed, bills to pay, and can live off your savings or current income, walk away. Keep in mind that the longer you stay out of work, the harder it will be.

If it's below 20% your market value and you're not financially desperate (as in depending on your emergency fund or dipping into investments to stay afloat), then walk away.

However, if you are, take it while continuing to aggressively pursue your job hunt until you find another role that pays something more reasonable. The moment you do, leave your job as soon as you can.

I wouldn't even give them 2 weeks' notice. Just say, "I'm starting a new job, and this will be my last shift." They didn't respect you enough to pay you something reasonable, so return the same amount of courtesy that was afforded to you.

Lots of engineers are looking for work right now, and the unprecedented number of layoffs has most certainly driven salaries down. This offer very well may be.what the market has to offer for the foreseeable future, I'd accept and keep looking, you may find yourself right where you need to be right now.

I have and I’m glad I did. In the long run I was able to find what I was looking for after being picky for a few months and I’m glad I did

If you don't have a job now, take it. That is this market. And keep quietly looking.

Look at your options. Are you currently employed or unemployed? How much longer can you go in your current situation?

The job market is not that great right now, and it could take a while before you get another job offer. The job market is the worst it's been since 2009. There are fewer job openings and a lot of people looking for a new job. There is a lot of uncertainty the current economy and the long term effects of the tariffs. So it doesn't surprise me much that companies are starting to cut the salary ranges for open positions.

My perspective echos a few other. It really depends on what your current position is. I’ve only had one move where I didn’t have a job and I had to just take a lowball offer just to make sure bills were paid. If you have other interviews in the end stages + currently employed then for sure walk. Only you know what salary makes the move worth it.

Additional Posts in Salary Negotiations

I’m interviewing for a marketing manager role at a company based in SF. I’m genuinely excited about the role and the company but we’ve yet to discuss salary. I expect to be asked at some point, but my research has given me a VERY broad range. So I’m here to do a bit more research. I’ve got 5 very relevant years of experience and will have an associate manager directly reporting to me. Are there any marketers out there who can share their salaries in similar regions and experience levels?
