Interest rates, inflation + tightening budgets, and outsourcing are a far bigger problem at the moment
I agree with this. Massive economic & labor forces outside of our control are more of a threat to our employment opportunities than AI at this moment.
The age of man...IS OVER!!!!!
Barely anyone has lost their job to AI, yet.
Certainly not true. As processes get automated; the need for humans reduces. I lost my job after 11 years the same exact day that the last manual process was automated. They got the last piece automated in the late morning and let me go at end of day that same day. Reason = Position has been eliminated. Of course; I was the highest paid on a team of 7 and the first too go
AI is an excuse for the layoffs. The reality is outsourcing. I expect to lose my job at IBM very soon and trust me, we don't have a single AI product that could replace a single job. But cheap, inexperienced workers to "replace" me? IBM has those in abundance.
It's all about the bottom line, $$$. What irks me the most is how they dismiss you.
I'm skeptical of a lot of things related to AI, and I'm skeptical that it's taking anyone's job. I think in time some marginal jobs will be lost. But anything that requires actual talent should be safe. Having said that, the tech industry has plenty of problems, but I don't think much of it can be blamed on AI.
AI is such a Buzz word. What we really have in development is advanced machine learning, like a super Search Engine that can recognize patterns. Learn how to integrate this into your daily tasks to be more efficient. I use it to help stay organized troubleshoot code, or even assiting with HTML/CSS formatting.
Everytime new tech emerges, yes some jobs leave but other jobs will fill this space they just need a more refined skills set. Fry cook gets replaced with automation, who is programming, repairing, and maintaining Fry Robot. "AI" is not at this level to take over and do these tasks like
human observation can.
Could you be more specific, what types of jobs would AI be taking over? There are hundreds of thousands of tech jobs and millions of people working in them. AI isn't on the radar for most of them.
If you are thinking of Designer jobs, where AI is creating artistic renditions, while AI may be creating digital content, jobs are being created for those who will be working with AI in that capacity. Only very sophisticated AI can create meaningful content and it requires someone to participate in the process.
The closest job automation AI I can think of is robots in factories, that’s been going on for years, and I wouldn’t call it tech.
If you want to find meaningful work, find something that interests you and don’t worry about what the rest of the world is doing, because it’s probably nonsense. There is no “max tech exodus”, though there have been tech layoffs this past year. The nonsense is that the media is reporting it as, “People are losing jobs to AI...” because AI is a popular topic and writers need to create content that generates hits, their publishers require them to tie it into AI. The reason for the tech layoff is so companies can get rid of higher post covid salaries and reset positions to lower pay rates. The tech layoff is about the corporations bottom line and expenditures that influence the valuation of a share of stock, not AI. IMO
Elon and Vivek are more of a threat to tech jobs (for American workers anyway) than AI is. So potentially, US tech workers may have to lower their salary expectations. Although H1-B workers make the same or more from my experience.
But I was laid off because my salary was too high. Someone interviewing for the same role replacing me reached out and asked about my experience there. From our convo, think they were offering her about $20k less.
The reality is it’s all about profits. Once you look at it through that lens, you’ll begin to spot the opportunities.
The tech issues are undeniable, but I don’t think it has much to do with AI. At least not to this severe of how it has been. I do foresee it ‘taking over’ some jobs, but not a huge workforce reduction. We have tons of other things to thank that for. Trying to diversify and find a niche myself, or marry rich! Might still have time in life for that!
I have recently seen that I can code much faster if I use an AI assisted IDE. I'm using cursor. A friend who is a founder says that in his start-up they all use cursor, and the speed up in coding is very significant. I'm sure a lot depends on the exact problem being tackled, but I think a 2x-5x speed up in coding is a reasonable estimate. If that holds for other developers in other problem domains, then you either need half as many developers, or businesses can tackle much bigger problems. Hopefully it's much more the latter.
Do software developers have it harder in the market because of AI? Yes - but not because 'AI is terking their jerbs!'. The real issue is that many companies have shifted money from investing in human resources to investing in AI, hoping to eventually replace those human resources. The question now is: what will happen sooner - replacement or investors realizing that money is being burned faster than productivity is increasing?
New technology, when it is successful, does take out a "vulnerable" sector of the job market. e.g. travel agencies. Our goal in the labor market is to "try" and stay invulnerable by keeping up with trends. I know this is easer said than done...
As the guy said on the Titanic movie “Follow the rats!!!!”
AI is definitely changing the landscape in technology, but the change will open doors in other avenues. But the shift will be difficult change is never easy
As a automation test engineer, I have used AI to speed up some coding stuff, especially in languages that I'm not a expert on. It does work! It helps to get another view on how to design code. It does require tweaking. But can it replace the person... Absolutely not. At least not in my line of work. I hope 😄
A lot of my peers are having trouble getting roles like ours and are pivoting to things like digital marketing 🥴
I had to shift from SOC Cybersecurity to accepting an IT job as a consultant / Implementation. Took me 11 months to get an offer after hundreds perhaps a 1000 resumes / applications with only a few interviews
Ahhh, I understand now. Best of luck to you!
Things That Cannot be Replaced.. are Hands on. Jobs & Skilled Trades.. Like.. HVAC Repair. Mechanics. & Manufacturing/ Production. As Well As Assemblers.. Boys Dont Seem to Want to Work With Their Hands These Days.. we are a Few Generations in. of Dads Not Teaching Boys to be Men.. All We Have Is Boys Wanting to Sit in a Office & Type..
My son is an HVAC guy and he specializes in new units put into new homes. He said the units are getting smaller and more computerized! At least the old units will still be around for a while for repair. He's a techie too so that should help.
AI Agents can do much more !!!
