You're not wrong at all. In a major city, I honestly think the number is probably higher than that. I'm in a mid sized city with a HHI of a little over $200k, and we still have to budget aggressively to pay all of our bills. Inflation is no joke.
Sounds about right. Combined income should be 150. Minimum
I’m embarrassed to say that I make 50 a year .. 50 years old live at parents house
They don’t ask for rent
I live comfortably with no stress and can’t afford a girlfriend probably lol
My car is paid off
Very peaceful no stress come and go as I please do whatever I want except for spend money lol
Remember financially, it’s very stressful just getting by .. starting a family
I’m interested
I think you are actually correct, things are so expensive everywhere, but more in bigger cities for sure. That's the main reason we just moved to Montana to a smaller city to work remotely and start a family.
For a quality life-style (purely subjective), I don’t think $100k can sustain a family (3-4 ppl) in any major city.
I don't think that's necessarily the case. I'm at $70,000 and it's enough for me and my family here in Chicago. But I guess it depends on the kind of quality of life you want and how many kids you have.
Pro
Yes very true, I have heard Chicago is great for its relative affordability. The coastal cities are out of control.
That wouldn't be a requirement, but it would depend on how many kids you'd have and the lifestyle you want. If you want to brag about the private schools your kids go to, forget about it, you better make more than that. If you want to live a reasonable middle class life, you could do it for less. But life in a city worth living in is just going to be costly, that's unavoidable.
Many people have families who have less than $100k. It's about prioritizing what you want and how you want to live based on what you have.
Pro
Thanks for sharing your stories. I realize this was bit of a subjective thing, everyone has different lifestyle preferences. I think I was just coming at it from being in a fairly urban place with things like walkability and transit. But I do kind of get the sense the combo of rent + childcare is becoming just such a burden.
