If you’re annualizing 1,000 max, why would anyone chew you out? You’ve got plenty of time for whatever people need.
Taking work outside my practice group is the only reason I survived a bloodbath mass associate layoff in 2009. Mind you, I was absorbed into the practice group I helped out (they had plenty of work) - and that is where I stayed, although I do have a significant amount of cross-specialization (which has been a nice niche). My original group never held it against me. It was one less thing they needed to worry about when there was no work coming in.
Is that standard for your superiors to get upset about? Shocked they didn’t help set this up for you. It’s what you should be doing.
I’m worried they will get territorial
This depends in large part on your firm’s culture and staffing philosophy. Some groups at some firms are very insular and territorial; some firms encourage associates to find work; and it certainly shows good imitative to try and find work when you’re very, very slow. I wouldn’t overthink it. But, if you want to CYA, just check in with the partners in your group first. Seek their advice
I doubt it. More likely that they were aware of your bandwidth and planned to utilize some of it, imo!
