Annualizing around 500-1000 hours this year (firm is having financial issues) and asked to work with someone outside my group, who said they were planning to ask me to help them with something anyway. Afraid I’m going to get chewed out, or am I overthinking things?

And yes I’m trying to lateral lol

If you’re annualizing 1,000 max, why would anyone chew you out? You’ve got plenty of time for whatever people need.

Taking work outside my practice group is the only reason I survived a bloodbath mass associate layoff in 2009. Mind you, I was absorbed into the practice group I helped out (they had plenty of work) - and that is where I stayed, although I do have a significant amount of cross-specialization (which has been a nice niche). My original group never held it against me. It was one less thing they needed to worry about when there was no work coming in.

Is that standard for your superiors to get upset about? Shocked they didn’t help set this up for you. It’s what you should be doing.

like

I’m worried they will get territorial

This depends in large part on your firm’s culture and staffing philosophy. Some groups at some firms are very insular and territorial; some firms encourage associates to find work; and it certainly shows good imitative to try and find work when you’re very, very slow. I wouldn’t overthink it. But, if you want to CYA, just check in with the partners in your group first. Seek their advice

I doubt it. More likely that they were aware of your bandwidth and planned to utilize some of it, imo!

Planning a trip to Rome and Naples with day trips to Tivoli and Pompeii. Is 1 week enough? I feel like reading through 3/4 day Rome and 2 day Naples itineraries, the trip seems rushed. I have unlimited PTO but my SO is limited in time (but luckily he can work extra hrs and then use less PTO). I would say max we could do is 1.5 weeks but adding on 3-5 more days seems almost too much? Thoughts? For reference, I did Venice-Florence-Rome in a week and it seemed okay but it also wasn’t as planned out

Hi Fishes,

I recently got an offer from PWC for Associate Director position.

I understand PWC shows the fixed component only as part of compensation benefit.

Can you please let me know how much bonus I can expect?

Can you please also let me know what is the annual hike provided by PWC?

I was doing some googling and I saw that PWC offers MBA hires 45k in comparison to MBBs at 70k +. Is this a bad joke? I can't imagine that PWC's target for MBA hires is widely different from MBB. In the US, the pay gap isn't that wide. Any reason behind this madness?

Junior Associates - How much student loan debt are you and your peers in these days? A few young partners and counsel at my firm were discussing the student loan moratorium and most of us were convinced we could have paid the majority of our loans off with the bonuses associates got these last two years. Working on some law firm applications tonight and it sucks that I know that I am so capable and have a strong work ethic but firms can’t see beyond grades or the fact that I didn’t go to a t14 law school or prestigious undergrad. I’ve worked twice as hard and feel like I’ve barely even gotten half as much. It’s discouraging sometimes especially because I worked so hard with pretty much no guidance (first gen, poc, low-income) to get into college and do well and then get into a t30 law school

Curious - would you consider a lateral move to a lower ranked firm if the practice group is higher ranked than at your current firm? In other words what’s more important - firm or practice group ranking?
