Another attorney and I were chatting with a judge and the other attorney said, “I cannot believe I’ve been practicing family law for 25 years.” The judge responded and said, “I know! I’ve been in for 20 this year.”

I looked at both of them, horrified, and said, “I hope I am never plagued with having to say either of those sentences.”

Yeah I’m 34, been licensed 5. I’m not doing this for 15 more years. I’m trying to retire early but even if I need to work it won’t be this. Just no.

Ever since I've put my resignation a different kind of fear is there in my head.

But then I wasn't able to manage my sleep schedule, work and classes daily. At the end I was hospitalized because my body gave up.

Its better to take calculated risks than regret for your whole life.

Thoughts?

I work with great people. Really can’t say anything bad about my firm in general either. But…I still dislike the entire premise of law firm life, the billable hour, etc.. I’d love to work in a law school setting as a counselor or something but I can’t afford the pay cut. *sigh* Does anyone feel like being a lawyer is just doing homework all day? First world problems I suppose. I’m very thankful to have a job ❤️

I’m so miserable every day is painful. I want to go tell pre-law school me it’s not worth the debt because you will hate this career and then feel trapped by the debt. And then I want to come back to present day, quit this life-leeching, soul-sucking job and start over doing something else entirely. Too much? Oh well. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

Has anyone made the transition from non-profit and small firm practice to federal government, big law, in-house? I’m a special education parent attorney at a small firm and I’ve spent my legal career in the education and juvenile areas of the law working for 2 non-profits before ending up at the firm. However, I’m just exhausted, unmotivated, and and looking for a change. At this point (6.5 yrs of practice), is that type of transition even possible or am I stuck due to the practice area?
