Any attorneys here use their LA as a personal assistant? Is this normal/acceptable?

No! Not acceptable. I’m lucky to have a wonderful secretary (that’s the job title, but it’s the same as legal assistant). I only ask her to do direct work stuff.

like

No. Lacks boundaries.

like

Only cool if you’re paying them for that work too.

like

I was definitely asked to do non-legal secretarial work before becoming a paralegal. I won't go into details, but yes it is asked and yes there are firms that don't have an issue with attorneys using their support staff in this way.

As a previous EA for managing partners, I consistently handled personal matters, and sadly, it was widely expected. I’m talking running to get them lunch, planning family vacations, obtaining passports/visas for family members, tracking down lost children’s birth certificates at the airport, etc. It got old, especially when it took away from my actual work for other partners/associates I was assigned, and I wasn’t being compensated for it.

like

If it is agreed upon and compensation is provided for the extra work -- and other, billable work gets done -- perhaps. It IA more common with partners who have been with the LA for some time or are older.

like

Partners do it all the time.

like

I haven’t and probably wouldn’t unless it was at least tangentially related to work or I was desperate. But I don’t think additional compensation would be needed for small requests unless it involves overtime. Every job includes doing things outside your set duties sometimes. I’d be sure to write an extra great review and give a generous holiday gift if my LA helped out with personal matters during the year, though, so they would feel appreciated. Also wouldn’t ask unless I knew they weren’t busy.

like

Rarely I ask mine to pick up lunch (but buy her lunch too) or notarize/mail something personal. Otherwise strictly work

Just had a hearing on my motion to compel where OC told the judge we hadn’t conferred before filing the motion. Not only did I attempt to confer on 3 separate dates, I attached the emails and his response that he refused to confer to my motion. Judge didn’t care, as soon as she heard him say we hadn’t conferred she denied the motion. Not asking a question, just needed to vent.
