For smaller kids I would recommend O gauge. Lionel and MTH are the two main brands. They are big, beefy toys - nearly indestructible. They also stay on the track better and provide more opportunity to haul the kids stuff around. Try going to a local hobby shop that sells trains and talk to them about it.
We just started a lego railway setup. It’s pretty good and compliments my sons other ‘creations’
Depending on your son’s age you might want to consider the investment and then decide. Real O gauge hobby sets are expensive and so is the track. You’d be looking at $500 minimum for a set plus accessories (switches, tracks, stations, etc.). A kid under the age of 6 is going to break it. Lionel sells more plastic ready to run sets for $100 or so that are perfect for littler kids. That said if you want to make the investment buy a Lionel lionchief set.

Yeah just get a lego train set to start. It’s modular and fun. If he doesn’t stay into it, the tracks make cool wings for airplanes too. Also if you haven’t been, go to the train museum in San Diego balboa park. It’s very cool and you both will love it.
