Bain & Company I’m currently prepping for Bain & Company and McKinsey & Company interviews scheduled in the next 2 months. For those that interviewed with both, how would you suggest I tailor my preparation for each one? I understand McKinsey is interviewer led while Bain is the opposite. But other than that, is there anything else I should work on separately for each one?

I got a dog after leaving Bain.
My plants have stopped dying.
I eat healthy.
I sleep better.
My back doesn’t hurt as much.
The world outside isn’t perfect but you can finally be human again.
Go for a broadway show in the evening instead of waiting for the C to send over the decks to review!
Great post. Thank you. I sent it to my Chief People Officer who came from your firm to make sure we stay human at ghSMART.
As I write this, I am on my back deck listening to crickets and chill EDM music, shooting baskets with my kids and trying to dodge my two golden retrievers. (Wife at a ladies night sinner). And I’m here.
This is what life is all about. Family. Impact. Fun.
Work is great, but it sucks if you don’t have a great personal life. I support your post 100%. DM me if you want to continue the conversation, friend.
ghSMART is a refuge for top performing MBB who want to have a life. Period. That’s what motivates me these days. That reality. Yesterday at a LA team building event, my new former top performing MBB colleague (McK and BCG) told me “A year ago I read what you wrote on Fishbowl and thought it was too good to be true. But I’ve been here almost a year and I see it is true. I wish everybody knew about ghSMART.”
Left in January, after 3 burnouts almost back, best thing for my life
Not going to lie. Sometimes I miss a few things, like team events and the people (some not all hahah), but now I LIVE. I'm enjoying me life and having time with the people I care
At least for me, the benefits outweigh the tradeoffs I was making to my physical and mental health while in consulting.
It was hard to leave after 6-7 years, and the amount of stress I sloughed off as soon as I told them I was leaving is insane. I no longer experience nor do I anticipate experiencing as often or as intense feelings of burnout and dread.
Yes I miss some things
- the team and the people: the bond you build in the trenches, getting to know coworkers in and outside of work
- the perks of consulting: fun events, nice dinners)
- the intellectual rigor which does exist outside but not as consistently
- the money
The things I picked up far outweigh that and I am feeling more like a human and me again
- having evenings and weekends back - not just not working but not worrying about work
- much less everything is urgent, let’s be ready for that question with appendix slide 371, the deck blew up and redoing everything
Left for the same TC (BCG P, Western Europe) at a large corp. Consistently clocking 40h a week, with maybe 1 peak or 2 at 60 for the last year
Want to leave but I keep telling myself to wait until Q1 next year for the Principal promo (currently PL2) and take the longer transition option (8 months)
Indeed they do be dangling
Left a couple years ago at the SM/principal/AP level. Def miss the year on year comp trajectory, though long-term it could even out and well exceed.
My job is interesting, I work way less, generally like the people I work with, and have way more direct impact.
Couldn't be better. I have a life, my sleep is better, I am in a relationship.
Truly a weight off my shoulder / back that makes me so much happier. Took a ~15% pay cut and couldn't care less
LOVE the honesty.
Hey, we all want to feel human.
There is another refuge within ultra high end consulting where you can maximize on impact, make top compensation, and most importantly HAVE A LIFE.
It’s called ghSMART.
I founded it at 30 years ago because I did not wanna lineup with the legions of investment banking analysts in New York. I did not really feel like giving my life to MBB. I wanted to create the firm that I wanted to work at, that did meaningful and impactful work advising the most influential leaders of the world on their most important decisions. I wanted to make top compensation. And I wanted to have freedom of choice and flexibility so I could hang out with my kids and be a good husband and enjoy all the other wonderful parts of life in addition to creating massive shareholder value for my clients.
If this resonates with you, DM me. I am actually the founder. My name is Geoff Smart. Fishbowl registered me as Geoffrey but I don’t go by Geoffrey. I’m not a bot. And I’m not a recruiter.
Thanks!
With gratitude,
